Review of Turbulence by Lyn Gala

Turbulence
Turbulence by Lyn Gala

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am a fan of sci-fi romance, but unfortunately I have not found many authors who are able to successfully combine the right amount of romance, action, and sex. After reading the blurb for Turbulence I was looking forward to reading it. Upon reading the Dedication, my excitement over reading it skyrocketed. I am a huge Firefly fan and Jayne has always been my favorite character, so the idea that Ms. Gala's character Jacqs was inspired by Jayne ... well that was just shiny. Not only did I get to enjoy the inclusion of Fireflyisms, but I got to imagine Adam Baldwin getting all hot and sweaty with Zeke. But the nod to Firefly is only a part of what made this an amazing read.

Turbulence sets the stage for the series and it is through Jacqs and his coming to terms with his sexuality that we learn about the universe in which this series is set. Jacqs's universe is much more accepting of sexual differences than ours. He has spent his entire adulthood as a het (heterosexual) man and never once had doubts as to his sexuality until it was pointed out to him several times that the newly arrived Commander Zeke Waters was attracted to him. So often I read books in which the main character’s epiphany (i.e., love at first sight, maybe I do like guys) comes immediately upon them setting eyes on the soon-to-be object of their affection. But not Jacqs. Nope, it wasn’t until several different crew members pointed out Zeke’s attraction to him that he began to consider Zeke as a potential sexual partner. But our dear, dear Jacqs doesn’t go through the angst and long, drawn out self-evaluation that most characters experience. He’s had a hard life, there’s a war going on, and he is a VERY practical man, so after an enlightening conversation (for both him and the reader) with Zeke regarding the various sexual classifications that crew members must register as, he accepts that he is not a het after all. Thus begins Jacqs’s exploration of an M/M sexual relationship with Zeke. While Jacqs might not be an educated man, he is a very dedicated student and his willingness to learn makes for many sizzling scenes between two testosterone-fueled, alpha male soldiers and all I can say is “Thank You Lyn!”

Obviously there is more to Turbulence than the sexual relationship between Jacqs and Zeke. Not only do we get to watch their relationship grow and deepen, we also get to go on the wild ride with them as they are called into action in the war that they’ve been fighting in for years. Both of these men are soldiers who are willing to do whatever it takes to save others and they do, more than once in the book. Suffice it to say, this is where Ms. Gala combines the right amount of action and romance with a liberal amount of hot sex to create a truly enjoyable read and I now have a new addition to my re-read list. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Drift, and learning more about some of the characters I met in Turbulence.

Review of Zane's Choice by Mardi Maxwell

Zane's Choice
Zane's Choice by Mardi Maxwell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Zane’s Choice proved to be quite the action-packed thrill ride as Zane wars with himself over his professional obligations and his love of a woman who may be guilty of some rather egregious crimes. That Ravyn is a feisty woman who has cultivated a take-no-prisoners personality to protect herself from the world her father and husband thrust her into just means that the sparks are flying. Of course no Ramsey courtship would be complete without Addison’s meddling, so we are treated to plenty of her shenanigans as she does her part to see Zane find his happily ever after.

I think I finally figured out what’s missing from this series that is keeping it from being a 5-star read for me. There seems to be very little attention paid to teaching the ladies about the D/s lifestyle. Granted, it has been a while since I read the first two books in the series, but as I recall all of the heroines have little to no experience with the D/s lifestyle. While they had a tendency to be submissive (in the bedroom, at least), none of them were experienced subs yet they were all expected to act accordingly. As such, the Ramsey brothers come off as demanding men rather than commanding Doms. While this may seem like semantics, it’s a missing ingredient for me that causes them to be good books rather than great books. Zane is no different in this respect from his brothers and it is his desire for a Master/slave relationship that was the “light bulb moment” for me. I do believe that Zane says they’ve talked about what he wanted in an M/s relationship, but there was little more beyond that discussion-wise. Ravyn seemed to be expected to know what Zane wanted from her. Not including the negotiation and “training” scenes is most likely why I’ve found the D/s relationships lacking in this series.

That said, Ms. Maxwell clearly made up for that with the amount of action, romance, and suspense she includes in this installment. Ravyn proves herself to be a strong character with her refusal to take the easy way out. Fortunately for her, the Ramseys are a protective lot once they’ve claimed someone, so Ravyn gets the helps she needs without asking for it. The twists and turns are aplenty and the level of suspense is what made Zane’s Choice such an enjoyable read for me. And I just gotta say, THAT was an unexpected bomb dropped at the end of the book! I can’t say I saw it coming either, but it certainly bodes well for the next book in the series as do the numerous new characters that were introduced. Let the stalking for book five begin.

Review of Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia

Poughkeepsie
Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The cast of characters in this book were awesome. I consider any book in which the author can make me love the bad guy a success, and Ms. Anastasia definitely made me love Beckett. While this book is primarily about Blake and Livia, there are so many relationships in Poughkeepsie to watch develop and flourish I found myself fully engaged and entertained.

I have read several books in which one of the main characters had a mental illness, but never one in which he was homeless and I couldn't wait to see how the author developed such a character and the subsequent relationship. I must say that I absolutely adore Blake and was rooting for him and Livia the whole time. I grew up with a parent with mental health issues and I found Blake's character to be so real and the way Livia had to interact with him at times hit close to home. Well done Ms. Anastasia!

I don't like spoilers, so there's not much more I can say about the specifics of the book. I look forward to reading Return to Poughkeepsie.

Review of Unequaled by Charity Parkerson

Unequaled
Unequaled by Charity Parkerson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In Unequaled we return to Rhys and how he has focused on his MMA career with a single-minded focus designed to block out everything he feels is lacking in his personal life. But a phone call from his brother brings Rhys back home and forces him to focus on everything he’s missing – friends, family, and love. While Rhys is dealing with all of the overwhelming emotions that accompany his trip home, he is not at all confused by his ever-present need to needle Kerry. And said needling is what sets the stage for the best thing that has ever happened to Rhys … Asher.

I thoroughly enjoyed the scene that Kerry sets up between Rhys and Asher. HOT does not even begin to describe it. My enjoyment of the set-up is magnified toward the end of the book when Kerry reveals her true motives to Asher and gives him the proper kick in the a$$ he needed. Admittedly, based on the blurb, I thought I was going to get some hot MFM action and although I did not, I am NOT complaining. The relationship that develops between Rhys and Asher is far better than a brief ménage encounter. Rhys and Asher are two very passionate men and that makes for some freaking hot sex scenes. But as the two are falling in love, the intimacy between the men ratchets up the heat and makes for some extremely stimulating reading. And while the two must navigate relationship speed-bumps, doing so only serves to strengthen their bond.

Somehow I missed reading Undaunted and while Unequaled definitely seems to follow that story, I didn’t feel lost as the author focuses on Rhys and his inner dialogue provides enough insight that reading book two is not a requirement. That said, I do plan to go back and read it when I get the chance as I enjoy Ms. Parkerson’s writing style and the novellas she weaves around Drew’s MMA club, No Rival. I also look forward to future books in the series.

Review of Riding Steele: Kidnapped by Opal Carew

Riding Steele: Kidnapped
Riding Steele: Kidnapped by Opal Carew

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. That pretty much sums up the situation Laurie finds herself in after a night out with her boyfriend takes a decided turn for the worse. Laurie has come to realize that her boyfriend Donovan is controlling and abusive. He wasn't always like that; in fact, his tendencies have revealed themselves gradually. But she no longer feels safe – she's literally scared for her life, especially after their last sexual encounter. She had planned to break up with him until he sprung their six month anniversary on her and she couldn't bring herself to upset him on an occasion he was apparently looking forward to. But as the evening wears on she realizes that she has to get out while she's still breathing. As expected, Donovan does not take kindly to being dumped and proceeds to prove Laurie's fears were well-founded. Fortunately for her, her brother Craig had solicited the help of Steele and his MC, so Wild Card steps in and rescues ... err, kidnaps her.

We actually learn very little about Steele as this episode is focused more on Laurie and setting up the story. That said, my favorite scene in Kidnapped – one that had me both laughing and feeling sorry for Laurie's lack of imagination – was quite revealing about the size of Steele’s physical endowment. Well done Ms. Carew. I’m on to part two, Untamed.

Review of Riding Steele: Untamed by Opal Carew

Riding Steele: Untamed
Riding Steele: Untamed by Opal Carew

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh my word! Now THAT was the sensual stimulation I’ve come to expect from Ms. Carew. This installment in the Riding Steele serial definitely left me panting. During one of several escape attempts, Laurie stumbles upon Raven being threatened by two unknown bikers. After her experience with Donovan, she can’t leave the woman at the mercy of two men no matter how badly she wants to escape. So against her “flight” instinct, she runs back to get help for Raven and encounters Steele. Laurie’s opinion of Steele takes a major nosedive when he chooses to watch the scene unfold rather than protect Raven. However, Laurie quickly realizes that Raven knows the two bikers and it’s not an attempted rape, and she finds herself unable to look away from the threesome. Despite her arousal, she refuses to allow her body to dictate her actions and tells Steele “no” when he propositions her.

No matter how aroused he is, Steele will not force himself on an unwilling woman – especially one he has come to suspect has been abused. But he also refuses to ignore his needs, so he handcuffs Laurie to a tree where she has a front-row seat to an unbelievably hot foursome. Good grief I needed a cold shower after that scene – m/f, m/f/m, and even some m/m action … yummy! These guys are the definition of Untamed. And while Laurie perseveres with her escape attempts, we have to wait for the next installment – Collide – to find out whether or not she was successful.

Review of Their Temporary Sub by Mardi Maxwell

Their Temporary Sub
Their Temporary Sub by Mardi Maxwell

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

While I enjoyed Their Temporary Sub, I really wish I had reread books one and two prior to starting it because I felt lost for far too long while reading it. I love ménage books, so I’ve been looking forward to reading Luc and Logan’s story. However, the speed with which the relationship between them and Cassie developed felt accelerated. As it has been six months and at least 200 books since I read Jackson’s Sub, I attributed the “rushed” feeling to being out of the flow of the series.

That said, after finishing Their Temporary Sub, I went back and reread Jackson’s Sub from where Cassie first enters the book and there just weren’t enough interactions between the three to balance it out. There seems to be a chunk of time missing despite the fact that book three picks up at the scene on which book two ended. Both Cassie and Luc’s emotions and wavering kept me dizzy for a large part of the book and not always in a good way. Fortunately, Logan was the stable and driving force that bonded them together – except for a singular incident, he remained steadfast in moving forward with the ménage relationship with his twin and Cassie.

As for that singular incident, it was Thor’s reaction that baffled me most when he chose to believe the word of someone he didn’t know over his goddaughter, whom he helped raise. Thank goodness the Ramsey men aren’t drawn to weak-willed women and Cassie was able to “prove” her innocence, getting everything back on track. And because love – and hormones – conquer all, the three forged ahead with their relationship … and lots of hot sex. While Their Temporary Sub was not everything I hoped it would be, it was still an enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Zane’s Choice.

Review of In the Fire by Nikka Michaels & Eileen Griffin

In the Fire
In the Fire by Nikka Michaels & Eileen Griffin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Within a few pages of starting In the Fire, I was absolutely heartbroken. I signed up to review it over a month ago and didn’t reread the blurb before starting it. So when I picked it up to read immediately after finishing In the Raw I was expecting a continuation of Ethan and Jamie’s relationship – either as they struggled with the long-distance relationship or picking up at Jamie’s return from Paris. Suffice it to say I was devastated to learn that Jamie didn’t return to Seattle when he finished his training in Paris, but went to New York for an internship there instead and that his and Ethan’s relationship had fallen apart over the distance and time. I wanted to freaking cry. As much as I hated the way in which the book began, I knew I had to stick with it because I could not bring myself to believe that Ms. Michaels and Ms. Griffin would not give these two the happily ever after they deserved.

In this installment, we find Ethan and Jamie living on separate coasts eight years later. I was shocked to learn that Jamie had become a celebrity chef. Not because he lacked the talent, but because it meant more time being a business and less time being a chef – which was one of the major reasons he avoided joining the family business. On the other hand, Ethan’s career progression did not surprise me in the least. And I was pleased to see that Claire was working with him in Cal’s restaurant and that she was still just as feisty with her brother as she’d always been. When an awards dinner forces them to face one another after eight years, well I’ll just remind you that Ethan was an arse and is still an arse, but this time around he is a wounded arse and that makes for one heck of a confrontation and one sexy bathroom scene when Jamie takes a REALLY drunk Ethan back to his hotel room to insure he’s safe for the night.

Although In the Fire is filled with a LOT of emotional angst as both men felt the other let him down eight years ago, it’s just the right amount of angst and the emotional struggles the two deal with give the story a feeling of realism. With both men still raw about the dissolution of their relationship, immediate or quick trust on either side would not be believable. I liked that there was no quick resolution and that both parties avoided talking about the situation as it was in line with the characters we knew. It’s also what made their individual moments of self-realization that they were still in love with one another that much sweeter – and the sex that much hotter. Additionally, the authors did a really nice job of keeping life moving forward as Ethan and Jamie were figuring out what they wanted. Jamie has a couple of intense confrontations with people who weren’t Ethan and it was quite enjoyable to see that change in his personality. In the same vein, Ethan had to deal with a seemingly endless number of incidents at Cal’s restaurant that were endangering its continued success. There was no magical stop to life as they attempted to reconcile and it just made the book that much more believable. I loved the ending of In the Fire and hope that the authors plan to add to the series as Claire deserves her story told. Either way, In the Raw and In the Fire are definitely on my reread list.

Review of In the Raw by Nikka Michaels & Eileen Griffin

In the Raw
In the Raw by Nikka Michaels & Eileen Griffin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

That was HOT!!! No pun intended. I will admit right off the bat that I was expecting a tense yet fun and sexy read – which the authors definitely delivered on. But I also got a book that was much more of an emotional read than I really expected and it blew me away. I found it quite entertaining that neither James nor Ethan had any clue that the other was gay AND attracted to the other – especially when we learn that Ethan’s sister Claire was well aware of it as were others around them. I’m not sure I’ve ever read an m/m romance where both main character’s gaydar was broken.

But seriously the relationship storylines within In the Raw are numerous and emotional – both good and bad – and they’re the driving force in the book. It’s clear right from the beginning that the sibling relationship between Ethan and Claire is not only strong, but also Ethan’s center – which is what makes Claire’s anger and silent treatment of Ethan at one point so significant. The friendship between Claire and James is clearly important to both of them, particularly to Claire as she is so busy with school and work that she doesn’t have much time to make friends, especially those who are truly interested in actually being friends. Although by no means a positive relationship, the one between James and his parents has a major impact on him, his behaviors, and his relationship with Ethan. I was outraged and devastated for James when his parents drew the line and refused to listen to him at all.

Ultimately it is the relationship between James and Ethan and how it develops that is central to this novel. It was quite amusing to learn that neither man wanted to be attracted to the other. Ethan resented James’s wealth and the opportunities his last name afforded him; whereas James wasn’t “out” and didn’t know how to deal with Ethan’s mercurial moods – in short, Ethan was an arse. Yet as the two are forced to spend time together due to a school project and get to know one another in the process they learn that their impressions of the other aren’t accurate. Their attraction grows despite their best intentions and the result is intense. The authors not only give us some highly erotic sex scenes, but also some beautiful moments of emotional intimacy.

In the Raw definitely has the In the Kitchen series off to an excellent start. Ms. Michaels and Ms. Griffin have done a great job in crafting James and Ethan’s story. I am so relieved that I have book two already so I can go straight into it as the Epilogue had me near tears more than once and I cannot wait to find out what happens next for these two. In the Fire here I come.

Review of Rescued by Bailey Bradford

Rescued
Rescued by Bailey Bradford

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I've read a string of contemporary romances in the past week, so Rescued came up in my reading queue at the perfect time; that it is an M/M book just made its timing that much more perfect. This is the first book in the Southwestern Shifters series and it’s an excellent start for the series. Ms. Bradford introduces us to Gabe and Mika, giving them a story that has just a little suspense, a lot of romance, and unbelievable amounts of sexy fun times.

Gabe is an animal lover and has gone to great lengths to save strays from the abusive actions of the local sheriff. This is how he comes to meet Mika - well, Mika as a wolf. Gabe gets a call for a wolf rescue and races to the animal's side in an effort to beat the Sheriff there. Fortunately for Mika, he does. Gabe has a strong reaction to the wolf that he finds very unsettling – and no, we're not talking about a sexual reaction you perv – rather, he gets possessive of the wolf and is distraught when the wolf takes off in the middle of the night. But Mika is drawn to Gabe, so he shows up on Gabe's doorstep the next morning and is forced to tell Gabe about what he is far sooner than he planned, but luckily Gabe's attraction makes him more open-minded to Mika's explanation and the two agree to see what happens. And let me just say that what happens is HOT!!! Mating pheromones and testosterone are a lovely combination for an M/M shifter book.

Ms. Bradford is off to a great start in her Southwestern Shifters series with Rescued. Mika and Gabe are a sexy couple that made for a very entertaining read as they deal with crazy authority figures, rescuing strays, and their developing relationship. I look forward to reading more by this author and the next book in this series.

Review of Jackson's Sub by Mardi Maxwell

Jackson's Sub [The Doms of Club Mystique 2]
Jackson's Sub by Mardi Maxwell

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Ramsey brothers are back in Jackson's Sub, the second installment of The Doms of Club Mystique series. This time around we get to enjoy the entertaining and steamy antics of Jackson and Jenna. Much like her best friend Addison, Jenna has been harboring a crush for a Ramsey brother for years - Jackson. And just like his brother Cade, Jackson doesn't think he's capable of loving a woman without hurting her. So despite his feelings, Jackson deliberately drives a wedge between him and Jenna after spending the night together. Fast forward a year and we find Jenna staying at the Ramsey's ranch while she helps Addison with wedding plans. As expected, Jackson and Jenna under the same roof makes for an entertaining read and some seriously hot sex scenes.

What was not expected, was the level of action and intrigue as we learned more about the brothers' biological parents. I enjoyed the expansion of this subplot as well as the insight it provides into Cade and some of the things he did in the first book. One of the things I enjoy about this kind of series is the follow-up on characters from previous books and I like that the author continued the character development of both Cade and Addison even though they weren't the focus of this book. Even more so, I enjoyed the groundwork she laid for the twins' book and I cannot wait until it is released.

Ms. Maxwell has provided us a well written and enjoyable novel in The Doms of Club Mystique series and I am impatiently waiting for the next book in the series.

Review of To Love and Obey by Mardi Maxwell

To Love and Obey
To Love and Obey by Mardi Maxwell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed reading To Love and Obey. Cade has a strong alpha Dom personality but has convinced himself that he can close the door on his dominant tendencies and lead a vanilla lifestyle with Addison when he gets ready to settle down and get married. As such, he never told Addison about his sexual preferences, so it’s not surprising that she felt betrayed when she walked on him sharing his brother’s girlfriend with him and a third brother. I did have a problem with Cade’s tendency to ignore Addison when she disagreed with him and at times strong-arming her into doing what he wanted. This leads me Addison who, while I loved her character most of the time, had an annoying habit of letting Cade control her in ways that conflicted with her personality otherwise. The biggest example of that was when he made her sign the contract. Nothing in their negotiations indicated that she was getting any of the terms she requested or that she wanted the terms they came to. For a red-head with a fiery temper, her personality was doused several times by Cade in ways that just didn’t jive with her character.

Despite this minor character issue, I enjoyed To Love and Obey and Ms. Maxwell’s writing. This was a fast-paced book with the right amount of action, hot sex (it is a BDSM book after all), and love that succeeds in kicking off the series right. I will be reading the sequel and hope to read future books in the series as I found the Ramsey brother’s quite interesting and cannot wait until the twins get their own book…their preference for symmetry just screams ménage relationship.

Review of Settling The Score by Dani Wade

Settling The Score: A Backstage Pass Novel
Settling The Score: A Backstage Pass Novel by Dani Wade

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As much as I enjoyed Finding Her Rhythm, I enjoyed this book even more. Although we met Becca in the first book, her appearances were mainly limited to her role as the band’s PR person so she was largely an unknown factor. While as Michael’s brother, Daniel played a much larger part in that book and as such I was looking forward to his story because I was already invested in his character and hoped to see him find his happy ending. Fortunately, Ms. Wade’s storytelling was right on track with Settling the Score, making Daniel and Becca’s story a wonderfully engaging read for me.

Both the opening scene and the closing scene of this book are amazing. You get to see just how much Becca affects Daniel and that it doesn’t waver at all throughout the novel. I actually felt badly for Daniel as he reveals that he has had feelings for Becca ever since she started as the band’s PR rep five years ago but has never been able to get her to see the man behind his public persona. But don’t jump to conclusions and make Becca out to be the bad guy in this relationship. She’s dealing with personal baggage from a previous relationship that has left her filled with self-doubt and blind to Daniel’s attraction. As we learn in the opening scene, the chemistry between the two is so all consuming that the world fades away with just a kiss. But Becca’s self-consciousness means that Daniel has to be patient and he proves that when properly motivated, he can really take his time … in more ways than one. I just want to say that Daniel can blindfold me any day … WOW!

As with the first book in the series, there is a romantic suspense angle to the story; however, it is much more pervasive in Settling the Score and the title actually alludes to this once you get past the musical inference. Ms. Wade does an excellent job of balancing the relationship development between Daniel and Becca with the ever-increasing threat that is targeting Daniel. It’s not easy to get and maintain a proper balance between sweet and hot and sexy and danger (the bad kind), yet the author has done it and done it well. This was a great addition to the Backstage Pass series and I cannot wait until I have a chance to read all three books in order. I do so hope that Ms. Wade has plans for a fourth book in the series.

Review of Taming Chaos by Lynne St. James

Taming Chaos
Taming Chaos by Lynne St. James

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

What we have here is a failure to communicate … err, I mean connect. I was really looking forward to reading Taming Chaos when I queued it up on my Kindle this morning. Yet for some reason I could not connect with either Chaos or Cynda. Being unable to connect with the main characters translates into not getting invested in their story. Not caring whether or not they were able to write songs together. Not caring whether or not the main characters have sex and if said sex was hot. Not caring whether or not Chaos was able to pull his head out of his a$$ and fix things with Cynda after a colossal eff-up. Not caring whether or not Cynda got to meet her father – actually that one I did care about, but you get what I’m saying.

This really sucks because I liked the storyline for the most part. The idea of a group of foster kids working hard to make it in the music industry (no instant success story here) was great. Couple that with a reticent songwriter whose talent is in her blood and present their story to me in alternating points of view and I SHOULD have been in heaven. But I wasn’t and it’s not the author’s fault. I liked Ms. St. James’s writing style and she does a nice job with the shifting POVs. My only complaint about the actual story is the ending – it felt rushed and far too much happened within an accelerated timeframe to make it feel real. With this being the first book in the Raining Chaos series, part of the ending scene should have been delayed until the next book (I can’t tell you what without spoiling it). Despite my lack of connection with Chaos and Cynda, I would like to read the next book in the series as I am interested in Sapphire and Wrath’s story and I can only hope that I fare better next time around so I can stick with the series to get to Michelle and Flame’s story. Taming Chaos is one of those books I recommend you check out the sample and decide for yourself – my failure to connect does not mean you’ll have the same issue so give it a shot because it may just be your next favorite book.

Review of Undaunted by Charity Parkerson

Undaunted
Undaunted by Charity Parkerson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Somehow I got my reading order mixed up and read Unequaled (book 3) before reading this, so I went in knowing which brother Mandy winds up with. Did this knowledge reduce my enjoyment of Undaunted at all? That would be an unequivocal NO! This was a great story and knowing who gets the girl didn’t make it any less enjoyable, or any less heartbreaking.

Mandy has been in love with Rhys for years. While Rhys loves Mandy, he’s never felt like he was good enough for her and they’ve kept each other firmly in the friend-zone deciding that having the other as a friend was better than not having him or her in their life at all. Unfortunately for Mandy, this means she has to witness the parade of women that Rhys indulges in and as an MMA fighter, there are a LOT of them. Her torture is worsened when, in a moment of grief coupled with alcohol, Rhys reveals his love and claims her physically but fails to remember it the next day. After Rhys’s brother Dane manhandles Mandy in a drug-induced state while looking for Rhys, she realizes that she has to let Rhys go – she can no longer deal with the destruction and heartbreak his presence in her life brings with it. This opens the door for Knox to step up and be the friend and stabilizing presence in her life that Mandy so desperately needs. Because they all feel that Mandy is Rhys’s girl, Knox fights his feelings for her until she makes it known that HE is what she wants. Let me just say that Ms. Parkerson certainly knows how to write sex scenes – whether it be M/F, M/M, or M/F/M, she writes extremely stimulating sex scenes.

There are definitely some twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting that made the story that much more intense. Even knowing some of the events that would play out after having read Unequaled before this took me by surprise. As I have read all three books in the series and read them out of order, I can confirm that you can indeed read them as stand-alone books and you can read them out of order without any problems. However, I do recommend reading them in order as it makes for a richer reading experience. I am looking forward to more books in the series and hope that Dane and Kerry get their own book soon (hint, hint).

Review of Brody by Mandy Harbin

Brody
Brody by Mandy Harbin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Now THAT was a seriously action-packed romantic suspense. Brody starts almost immediately with a literal bang, the prologue setting the stage quite shockingly and effectively. You know a romantic suspense novel is good when the mystery and storyline are so interwoven that almost everything is a freaking spoiler (which I’ll do my best not to reveal in my gushing). And that holds true for Brody, both the book and the man.

If you’ve read the blurb, you know that Xan meets Brody during her and her son’s most recent relocation with the Witness Protection program. As a member of a mercenary group that does government contract work under the cover of a small-town garage, Brody will soon learn everything about Xan. But none of the information tells him why he reacts so strongly to her and why he knows her from before his amnesia, especially when she shows no sign of recognizing him. And when I say Brody reacts strongly to Xan that is a mild term for the chemistry between the two of them. Because what little bit of info they’ve been able to discover about his past isn’t pretty, Brody is more of a “hit it and quit it” kind of guy – not wanting to develop attachments. But he can’t stay away from Xan and he is surprisingly cold and cruel toward her in the beginning as he tries to keep his distance from her. Thank goodness that mindset didn’t last. All of the sex scenes are hot, but once Brody accepted that he couldn’t avoid Xan, the physical and emotional intensity of the sex escalates and several scenes left me squirming and in need of a cold shower or two.

For the record, Xan freaking rocks as a heroine. With everything she endured at her husband’s hand, it’s amazing she gave Brody a chance, much less the second and third chances he needed when he messed up. Being so invested in Brody and Xan’s relationship made the revelations about Brody’s past devastating – I felt awful for both of them – and yet the hits kept coming at them. The conspiracies that abound in Brody are both mind-boggling and believable. I loved the manner in which Ms. Harbin resolved the storyline, while setting up the Bang Shift crew for future books. Although the first book in the series, it feels as though Brody and Xan’s story is complete – no unexpected cliff hangers here. That said, I do hope that future books in the series will provide updates about them. Either way, I am looking forward to reading about the other sexy mechanics/mercs of the Bang Shift team and cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Review of Unsurpassed by Charity Parkerson

Unsurpassed
Unsurpassed by Charity Parkerson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I want to start by saying that while I enjoyed the book, I feel like the author tried to put too much into the story and it actually took away from how good the book could have been. To me, it appears that in an effort to appeal to a wider audience, Ms. Parkerson included sexual elements that actually interfered with the story. If you've read my reviews, you know I love ménages, with MFM being my preferred. That said, the ménage scenes were underwhelming and really didn't add to the book. They felt rushed and I found the one-on-one foreplay interactions between Aubree and Ryan and Aubree and Max far more stimulating than their actual sex scenes. I feel the inclusion of the scene at the end between Ryan and Max falls into the same category - being included to simply to appeal to a wider reading audience. Unless the sequel is about Max and Ryan exploring this new facet of their relationship, this scene, too, was unnecessary to the storyline and didn't live up to the level of hotness the "Inside Scoop" warning promised. While these elements of the story didn't work for me that does not mean that I didn't enjoy the book.

The relationship between Drew and Aubree is great. As a successful championship MMA fighter, Drew can have his pick of women ... that is, women who want something from him, whether it be his money, his fame, or his body. Having grown up around the fight world, Aubree recognizes Drew for the player he is and effortlessly deflects his advances. Of course this means that Drew must have her, but not in the typical "I'm a famous alpha male and I get what I want" mentality, but rather a "this is a woman who wants nothing from me so I have to get to know her better" mindset. As Drew knows who Aubree's father was, he knows that she knows who and what he is and finds her lack of exploiting interest refreshing. As an added benefit, Drew finds Aubree beautiful and fun to be around, so he decides that she will be his. It is this relationship that makes the book. The interactions between Drew and Aubree are real and their banter is entertaining because they are comfortable with one another and feel free to be themselves. This level of trust is even more obvious when they're intimate and it makes for some really hot sex scenes (the intensity of which is why I found the ménage and M/M scenes lacking).

Unsurpassed is an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quick read with a sexy alpha fighter. However, if you're looking for a book with hot MFM ménage scenes or steamy M/M scenes, you may be disappointed. Based upon this book, I would say that Ms. Parkerson's talent lies in writing MF sex scenes and romances because she writes them VERY well. I'm looking forward to the next book in her No Rival series.

Secrets by Jeff Erno

Secrets
Secrets by Jeff Erno

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

For the most part, I really liked Secrets. While the idea of a school teacher sexually abusing his students and ending up murdered is not new, I enjoyed the way in which Mr. Erno presented the story. I am not a reader who tries to figure out “who done it” before the reveal; rather I prefer to go with the flow of the story and watch events unfold. I might have my suspicions as to who is responsible, but I try to refrain from jumping to conclusions. That said, I have to say that for one of the people who was involved – I never saw it coming, he was not even on my radar. And as more and more of the facts surrounding the case were unveiled, the level of conspiracy involved was astounding, yet presented in such a way that it was a believable story.

I enjoyed Mr. Erno’s writing style and felt that he treated a sensitive subject carefully. He infused the right amount of suspense into the story as Chris worked to clear an innocent kid’s name, while trying to find the actual party responsible. Chris’s reaction to a new partner when he’d been assured that he could work alone was authentic as was his reaction when he thought she had betrayed him. His relationship with his husband Ethan was clearly loving and I enjoyed most of their interactions.

Oddly enough, the part of the book that didn’t work for me was the part I expected to enjoy the most. If you’ve read my reviews before you know I am a fan of m/m romance. Yet with the exception of the opening sex scene – which was freaking hot – the remaining scenes kind of fell flat for me. They just felt contrived, as if they were added to the story solely for the purpose of having m/m sex scenes in the book. But despite this minor issue, Secrets was a great romantic suspense and I look forward to reading more of Mr. Erno’s writing and this series.

Review of Cooking Up a Storm by Ashley Ladd

Cooking Up a Storm
Cooking Up a Storm by Ashley Ladd

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Cooking Up a Storm turned out to be just an okay read for me. Due to their length, I tend to give novellas more leeway regarding the speed with which relationships develop. Some authors address this issue by stating that the potential couple have known each other for years, a decade, or since childhood, thus allowing the reader to assume their shared history. Others address it with an overwhelming draw between the characters – that “love at first sight” phenomena. However, in the case of Brooks and Rique, neither was the case. Rather too much alcohol on their first night on the island was the impetus for them falling into bed together. Granted, I don’t take issue with that either because one-night-stands happen daily. Where it went wrong for me was that within just a few weeks, they were “in love” after having spent a few nights together and competing against one another (as well as three others) for the job of head chef – game show style. Other than some REALLY hot sex scenes, there was almost no relationship development to be witnessed by the reader. That Brooks is supposedly still raw over being dumped by his long-time partner for a woman, makes the speed with which they fall in love harder to swallow. Added to that is the fact that we are supposed to accept that after a mere two months’ time, both men are also in love with a third man.

Probably the thing that irked me the most about the book is the hurricane, more specifically David’s comment at the end: “I also want to report that the eye of the storm has passed and the winds are dying down.” As someone who has lived in Florida for all but the first six months of her life and has ridden out some really severe hurricanes, that was a big “WTH?” moment for me. The eye of the hurricane is usually the calmest part of the storm. It can be eerily calm. And in all actuality, once the eye passes, the tail can be the most destructive part of a hurricane. While I realize this weather inconsistency won’t matter to most readers, the hurricane plays a big role in the story and it really bothered me, especially once I read that Ms. Ladd lives in South Florida.

One of the things I did like about the book was David’s character, but that didn’t occur until the end. Once David was allowed to function in a situation that played to his strengths, his character was much more enjoyable to read about. Admittedly, it was one heck of a contrived situation, but it didn’t make David’s actions any less impressive. While I found the idea of a two-month long game show-style job interview to be a novel one, Cooking Up a Storm fell short of the mark for me and is thus just an okay read. Sadly, the hot m/m and m/m/m sex weren’t enough.

Review of The Seer by Ariel MacArran

The Seer
The Seer by Ariel MacArran

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. MacArran has just been added to my must-read list for sci-fi romances. I absolutely loved The Seer. In the Tellaran Realm, Seers (persons with psychic abilities) are executed simply for being born. Arissa's parents hid her existence as soon as they detected her abilities as a child and continued to do so up until they were killed in an accident. We meet Arissa eight months after their deaths and the story begins with a literal bang as she saves Jolar from being shot. Jolar's culture believes that you owe a great debt to one who has saved your life. In trying to begin repaying his debt, he unknowingly puts her in danger of being discovered and executed. From there we are taken on an action-packed undercover assignment to find out who is attempting to grasp power and take control of the realm (and I didn’t see it coming).

I definitely enjoyed their interactions as Jolar introduced Arissa to the world her parents hid her from. It was endearing to see his frustration over her reactions melt as he learns about the things she's never done. Jolar seems to enjoy being the first to introduce her to many things, yes, including sex. It should be noted that The Seer is a romance, not erotica and while there are a few sex scenes in the book, they are not graphic (hot, but not graphic). They are used to illustrate the relationship development between the two as they fall in love.

Lots of romance and lots of action set in another universe makes The Seer a fabulous sci-fi romance that has earned a spot on my re-read list. I will be checking out Ms. MacArran’s other books that are set in the neighboring galaxy while I await the next Tellaran novel.

Review of Pleasure Point by Eden Bradley

Pleasure Point: Invitation to Eden
Pleasure Point: Invitation to Eden by Eden Bradley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I SO loved this book! Miranda and Roan are both employed by the Eden resort – Miranda as a full-time pastry chef who lives on the island and Roan as a consultant who visits the island every few months to make changes to the dungeon and its equipment as needed. They both like sex with a power exchange, clear D/s roles, and, as their story reveals, a bit of edge. They also belong to that exclusive club no one really wants to be a member of – the widow and widowers club. With so many things in common, it’s no surprise that the Island puts them together for the week.

While Pleasure Point is full of steamy scenes of submission, it is ultimately a second chance love story. Both Miranda and Roan loved their spouses deeply, and five and ten years later (respectively) they are still feeling the loss of their love. They agree to the week together in an effort to help one another take the next step in the healing process. I found their emotional responses during the week to be authentic to their characters’ pasts as they dealt with fear, anxiety, a resurgence of grief, pain, anger, attraction, desire, trust, and, eventually, love. Yes, they fell in love in less than a week, but it wasn’t instant, they fought it, and it came with the earning of one another’s trust. The relationship development felt real because they were able to overlook one another’s emotional upsets due to their shared widow/widower status.

Despite being set on a fantasy island, I found Pleasure Point to be a believable tale of a couple’s second chance at happiness. I like my contemporary romances to have a happy ending after a believable storyline and Ms. Bradley did an excellent job in delivering it. The journey she takes Miranda and Roan on is an emotional one and I enjoyed getting to tag along for the ride – even if I did have to break out the tissues at one point. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Bradley’s work and was excited to learn that I actually have book two in her San Francisco Doms series in a box set I purchased – now I just have to fit it in to my reading schedule.

Review of Finding Her Rhythm by Dani Wade

Finding Her Rhythm
Finding Her Rhythm by Dani Wade

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Finding Her Rhythm was an awesome read. I connected with Taylor almost immediately. I felt so bad for her and the situation she found herself in with her stalker ex. Fortunately she has a great friend in Stephen and he has the perfect solution for her – being the nanny for the tween children of rock star Michael Korvello. While their first meeting may not have been the best impression – for either of them – it certainly insured a lasting impression.

Oddly enough my favorite scene in the book was not one of the smoking hot sex scenes, but rather the first time Michael shared a meal with his children and Taylor. I love, love, loved the way Taylor dealt with Matthew’s refusal to clean up his mess. The way in which she presented his choices of either clean up the mess or you don’t get to take part in family fun night appealed to my professional training and I fell under Ms. Wade’s spell that much harder. I was relieved when Michael finally began to let his guard down and realized that pursuing Taylor might be worth the risk to his heart. I don’t know who I was rooting for more, even if it was for the same outcome.

I had so much fun reading Finding Her Rhythm and watching Taylor and Michael build a relationship while trying to sidestep the other’s baggage. While the sex was hot, it was also sweet as Michael set out to help Taylor overcome her body image insecurities and the emotional damage inflicted by her ex. And because Taylor is dealing with a psycho stalker ex, there is a bit of drama and suspense in the final chapters of the book. I absolutely loved Finding Her Rhythm and cannot wait to read Settling the Score.

Knockout by J.C. Valentine

Knockout
Knockout by J.C. Valentine

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In Knockout, we meet Ally and Jami as they reconnect after years of separation. As children, they were the only person in the other's life they each felt they could trust and depend upon. Despite the years that have passed, they both still feel that connection that bonded them as teens and find themselves spending more and more time together as they establish their friendship ... and possibly more.

I must state that I absolutely loved that the author did not make Jami the stereotypical player that I tend to find with MMA characters. No, he's not a virgin, but he's not the manwhore his buddy Spence is and not once did he appear to be tempted by the blatant offers he got from other women. As a result, Ally wasn't forced to be the stereotypical insecure woman always wondering if she was pretty enough to keep her man. In fact, she's almost too independent and secure, which is what allows Tony to get too close and led to the only part of the storyline that bothered me; seriously, has she never heard of Google? It made absolutely no sense to me that she didn't look Tony up when she moved Tori and Miles in with her. And except for that small plot point, Knockout was fabulous.

Ms. Valentine has created great cast of characters and the chemistry between Ally and Jami is palpable. The sexual tension between the two is so intense that I was surprised that I was so far into the book before they finally hooked up, and I must say that I will never look at a boxing ring the same way again. Knockout is a great start to the series and I'm looking forward to reading Tapout as I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Review of Wild Ride by Opal Carew

Wild Ride: Invitation To Eden
Wild Ride: Invitation To Eden by Opal Carew

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Wild Ride was exactly that. As expected, an Invitation to Eden is never quite what the invitee expects. When Marissa receives an unexpected invitation she thinks that maybe her prayers have been answered because the private island is the perfect place to hide from her biker ex-boyfriend who is trying to insert himself back into her life. By the time she learns that her safe haven might not be so safe after all, it’s too late to turn back so she endeavors to enjoy her time on Eden, convincing herself that there is no way that Rip would be on the island. Of course the island gives you what you need, and Marissa soon finds herself face-to-face with her terrifying ex and in her haste to escape, she jumps on the back of Killer’s bike.

Killer. Now that's a name that is sure to cause feelings of safety and security to invade your head and heart. Not even a little bit. Yet for some reason (lust), Marissa finds herself trusting him and places herself in his care. This is the point at which I seriously questioned her sanity. Considering her reaction to Rip, the last thing she should do is hop on the bike of someone she doesn’t know – he could be riding with Rip for all she knows and she just delivered herself to him. But trust is not always something that is rational and he made her feel safe, so she went with it and boy did she ever go with it. Once Killer gets her to safety he can no longer pretend that she doesn’t affect him. And as he proceeds to put her through the paces of submission, he realizes how much he underestimated the effect she has on him.

As expected on Eden, the sex scenes are hot and they are plentiful. The sex between Killer and Marissa was HOT! During conversations earlier in the book between the two about fantasies, I expected that there would be a ménage scene and Ms. Carew did not disappoint – surprised me with the identity of the other man, but no disappointment. The inclusion of two additional MC members was not surprising either and seriously ratcheted up the heat factor with the MFM and MFMM interactions. However, what did surprise me was the inclusion of another female and the FF scene that followed. It surprised me because Killer seemed confident that Marissa would be okay with it when they had not discussed it previously and because there was no indication earlier in the book that is was coming. Sadly this jerked me out of the story and interfered with my reading flow. Despite this interruption, Wild Ride was a really good read for me and I am looking forward to more of Ms. Carew’s writing and another trip or two to Eden.

Review of The Estate by Sara O'Rourke

The Estate
The Estate by Sarah O'Rourke

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh Ms. O’Rourke what a perfectly naughty read! The Estate is exactly what it claims to be - graphic erotica with an M/M/F ménage that will delight fans of the genre as Grayson is introduced to The Estate. Although we don’t get the full details, we are given enough to know that Grayson is in need of some serious relief of sexual tension. Not only that, he is dealing with his attraction to his bi-sexual boss, Marc, who has been harboring feelings for Grayson for a decade. Marc convinces Grayson to accompany him to The Estate, where Boston’s elite shed their public persona and indulge in whatever hedonistic activities strike their fancy.

Marc is one of The Estate’s elite members. He has been waiting for the opportunity to initiate Grayson into his world, even if only for the weekend. He learns upon their arrival that Ice (the ladies all use fake names) is there for the weekend and has requested the company of two men. As Marc has indulged in Ice before and is aware of her proclivities, he is pleased for the opportunity her presence provides.

Once Grayson recovers from his shock of who Ice is when she’s not at The Estate, things heat up quickly as this trio indulge in as many pleasures as they can with one another. Ms. O’Rourke is definitely up to the task of providing the reader with plenty of steamy sexual escapades as Marc and Ice initiate Grayson into the world of The Estate. This is a definite re-read for me and I am looking forward to the sequel.

Review of No Boundaries by S.E. Jakes

No Boundaries
No Boundaries by S.E. Jakes

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I gotta get it out of the way. The final scene of the book, BLEW. MY. FREAKING. MIND! I can’t talk about what the scene was but holy crap on a cracker that was HOT!!! Now the other thing I need to get out of the way is that I really hope that the formatting issue in my pre-release copy is fixed in the final version. There were no blank-line breaks to indicate scene changes, thus requiring me to re-read sections several times throughout the book when I realized that the scene had changed. Normally I wouldn’t comment on a formatting issue in my review, but I feel compelled to tell potential readers so that they know to stick with the book should the final copy still contain the formatting issue because the book is soooo worth it. That said, I’ve read Ms. Jakes’ work before and books from Samhain Publishing, so it’s likely a moot warning.

Now for Cole and Marcus. No Boundaries was an intense, action-packed, romantic suspense read that kept me glued to my Kindle. The chemistry between the two is absolutely electrifying. There were times I could imagine being able to see the sparks literally fly between the two of them. So when their first hook-up was spurred on by anger, I was not the least bit surprised and these two do angry sex oh so good. And Cole and Marcus weren’t the only ones getting their sexy fun times on either. Styx, Law, and Paulo had their fair share of ménages play out in the book and their bedroom activities were just as Kindle-overheating as Marcus & Cole’s were.

Despite this plethora of hot man-on-man(-on-man) action, the romantic suspense angle definitely kept me on the edge of my seat as Marcus and the men of Phoenix, Inc. worked to find out who was stalking Cole, while protecting him from the escalating threats. Ms. Jakes does an excellent job of infusing the characters with emotion that pours off the page – I could feel the men’s frustration and anger when the stalker kept slipping through their grasp. The resolution to the situation was immensely satisfying for me, as was Marcus and Cole’s journey to get there.

Prior to reading No Boundaries, I was unaware that Styx, Law, and Paulo’s story was already the subject of a book in another of Ms. Jakes’ series. As such, I will be going back and reading Bound by Law because I REALLY want to see how these three got together. I suspect it and No Boundaries will quickly become a back-to-back re-read duo when I’m in the need of some hot m/m and m/m/m romantic suspense. I’m looking forward to the re-read already while I await the release of the next book in the Phoenix, Inc. series.

Review of Dark Secrets by Madeline Pryce

Dark Secrets
Dark Secrets by Madeline Pryce

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I’m freaking speechless. I don’t even know where to start. Dark Secrets is the continuation of Ella and Micah’s story and it may be even better than Dark Cravings. There is so much that goes on in this book that I don’t even know where to begin. I had to check the blurb to make sure I don’t reveal any spoilers and now realize I can’t talk about most of the stuff I want to talk about because it could really spoil the book for those who haven’t read it yet. UGH! That is seriously frustrating.

Getting the easy stuff out of the way, the sex between Micah and Ella is even HOTTER this time around. They’ve spent enough time together and have learned what the other likes, so ALL the right buttons are pushed. Seriously hot! But the sex wasn’t the only thing that nearly made my Kindle go up in flames and yes, you’ll have to read it to understand that. Both Micah and Ella learn some painful truths in this installment of the Dark series and their love is tested more than once in this book. I won’t lie, I was concerned as the end of the book neared and I didn’t see how Ms. Pryce was going to be able to resolve the situation in time. It seems that each time they get one loose end tied up, another one (or two) begins to unravel. While there is some resolution, there are still unanswered questions – this is a good thing because that means more Micah and Ella!

Again, the author took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions. There were moments that I was smiling so big that my face hurt and moments when the emotional devastation a character felt was so strong, I couldn’t help but hurt for them. Oddly, the never-ending stream of upheavals that Micah and Ella have to address in this book never felt contrived or forced to me. I’ve read books in which it felt like the author had a checklist of plot points they seemed compelled to include, thus making a storyline feel forced. That was so not the case here. Ms. Pryce creates a story that is action-packed, sexy as sin, and entertaining from beginning to end. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.

Review of Dark Innocence by Madeline Pryce

Dark Innocence
Dark Innocence by Madeline Pryce

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Oh my goodness that was hot! I want to know where I can find my very own lion. Ms. Pryce can write some sexy vampires but I think that Dante just might exceed them in sexy points and not just because he's hot.

In Dark Innocence we find Hannah not coping well with life post-Lizbeth’s abduction. She's trying to numb herself with alcohol, drugs, and sex. Unfortunately her eidetic memory makes any reprieve short and her actions just add another guilt-laden memory to her suffering. Fortunately she is able to call Dante to help her out of her most recent predicament as they have remained in contact since he helped rescue her. That Dante is the only person in her life who knows the depths to which she has sunk, yet still comes to her aid when she calls only adds to the feeling of safety his presence instills in Hannah. It is the manner in which he handles Hannah that increases his hotness quotient exponentially. He is gentle with her when she needs it but is not afraid to deal out a little tough love and it is this tough love that helps her to get her life back under control - no more alcohol, no more drugs, no more men ... well, only one man. May I say that I loved Hannah's attempted seduction? I would still be laughing were it not for the nail-biting situation Hannah found herself in immediately afterwards.

As the danger Hannah faces intensifies she finds herself under Dante's protection and, even more importantly, under Dante! Thank you Ms. Pryce for making Dante a lion shifter! Everyone knows that cats love their cream and Dante is no exception ... oh my that man sure made my kitty purr. I appreciated that Dante spent so much time being intimate with Hannah, engaging in some serious foreplay, and made sure she was ready before they finally went all the way - and you'll have to read the book to know exactly what I'm referring to.

As with Dark Cravings, there is a lot of action as Hannah finds herself the target of a stalker. And despite the fact that she has been sheltered from the dark side of the world by her family for much of her life, with Dante's help, she finds her inner strength and proves that she has Grey blood running through her veins too. Again Ms. Pryce writes with just the right balance of erotica and paranormal romance. I'm looking forward to reading Dark Secrets next.

Review of Dark Cravings by Madeline Pryce

Dark Cravings
Dark Cravings by Madeline Pryce

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am so mad that it took me so long to finally make time to read this book. Oh, it was sooooooo good. Dark Cravings is the first book in the Dark series and the beginning of Ella and Micah’s story. You know the old saying, “it’s a fine line between love and hate.” Well that is Ella and Micah’s relationship as the book opens.

Ella is a half-turned vampire still working for the Shadow Agency – an agency whose sole mission is to eliminate vampires and other demons. The only reason she’s still breathing is because her family helped to found the agency and she’s one of the best Shadow Hunters they’ve had in years – and that was before her acquisition of the supernatural skills that accompanied her partial transformation. In a word, Ella is bada$$. She is one of the best female lead characters I have read in a long time when it comes to paranormal romances. Those she cares for, she cares for deeply and her loyalty and protective instinct toward them borders on suicidal at times.

Of course, with such a strong female lead, you absolutely must have an equally strong alpha male lead. And Ms. Pryce succeeds in this challenge superbly as Micah is the perfect yin to Ella’s yang. The chemistry between the two is staggering. Even when they hated each other you could feel the pull between them, so it was no surprise to me that when they were finally compelled to mate, it was intense. Oh to have been a fly on that hotel room wall. Four days? Really? Although we are only treated to snippets from their first encounter (they were under a spell and couldn’t remember it all), they certainly make up for it each and every time thereafter. I don’t have a word for how hot the sex was.

But Dark Cravings isn’t all romance and erotica; the book also has some serious action going on and there are definitely some underlying storylines that I look forward to reading more of in future installments. I am ashamed to say that until now, I have only read one of Ms. Pryce’s Ellora’s Cave Quickies. But that is soon to be rectified as I am about to indulge in a [a:Madeline Pryce|7503278|Madeline Pryce|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1388860195p2/7503278.jpg] reading binge. Up next is Dark Innocence and I am so looking forward to reading Hannah’s story. I cannot wait to devour the rest of the Dark series as this author can weave a wonderful story that balances erotica and paranormal romance perfectly.

Review of Chemistry of Attraction by Thianna D.

Chemistry of Attraction
Chemistry of Attraction by Thianna D.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have a girl crush on Dina. Mainly because her awkwardness and social skill deficits (e.g., offending people without intending to) remind me so much of myself at her age. I related to her character so easily that I devoured Chemistry of Attraction, and boy howdy was there some chemistry between Dina and Brandon. Whew! I think Thianna D. may have made my Kindle overheat a time or two.

As for Brandon, he is all man just as one would expect a retired Marine to be. I LOVED the reason he was ultimately attracted to Dina. Her looks may have caught his eye, but it was her intelligence that kept his attention. I really liked the patience he had for Dina as well as he helped her to explore her interest in spanking and Domestic Discipline. Again, what’s up with the grandparents not telling their adult visitors about the community until after they arrive ... lol?

Just in case Dina and Brandon’s relationship development isn’t enough, the author gave us several scenes with Jonathan and Benjamin – whose story I am ever so patiently waiting for. I certainly feel like I got my cake and got to eat it too! Chemistry of Attraction is a great read and it certainly has Corbin’s Bend Season Two off to a great start.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Review of Stone, At Your Service by Rie Warren

Stone, At Your Service
Stone, At Your Service by Rie Warren

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh my goodness that was such a fun read! I freaking LOVE Josh Stone. Not because he’s sexy … and he is. Not because he’ll do anything for a friend … because he does. Not because he’s a take-charge, alpha male … and oh my lord is he ever. Not even because of the way he treats Leelee as he attempts to win her heart while trying to protect her from the world. The reason I love Josh Stone is for the way he loves his son. It was the sweetest effing thing I’ve ever read. I’m blown away by Ms. Warren’s ability to write such a multi-faceted character who was so heart-stoppingly sexy while being heart-breakingly sweet (yes, I’m making up words here) and making him believable.

And Leelee is just as great of a character as Josh. She’s vulnerable, unbelievably shy, witty, and drawn to Stone like a moth to a flame. Considering the reason for her previous breakup and her belief that Josh and Nicky are a committed GAY couple, her resistance in completely understandable … even if it’s futile. I absolutely loved it when she stood up to LaForge – both times. I felt frustrated for her as she fought her desire to be with Josh – thinking that he’s involved with someone and that he’s gay. The need to control their actions and responses when around one another resulted in some rather explosive sex scenes when they finally got together.

Ms. Warren has kicked off her Carolina Bad Boys series with a bang. Stone, At Your Service is an excellent start for the series. She has created a great cast of characters that I’m looking forward to learning more about in future books in the series. I was thoroughly entertained as I laughed and cried with Josh and Leelee. This is a definite reread for me and I am so looking forward to the next book in the series for Nicky’s story.

Review of A Saint's Salvation by Beverly Ovalle

A Saint's Salvation
A Saint's Salvation by Beverly Ovalle

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

So I learned something new about myself while reading A Saint’s Salvation ... I am not a fan of books in which the author tells me what is occurring, rather than showing me what is going on. By this I mean that rather than being inside Nick’s head and being “shown” his thoughts and feelings (e.g., Nick cleared his throat loudly, frustrated by her lack of her response), the author tells me what he is feeling (e.g., Nick felt as if he was unraveling). While narrative story telling is a perfectly acceptable style of writing, personally it prevents me from connecting with the character and thus reduces my enjoyment of the book. That being said, Ms. Ovalle does a good job writing this way and has produced a well-written story. I liked the verbal interactions between Nick and Doc and found the sex scenes to be quite enjoyable. I especially appreciated the message that A Saint’s Salvation sends regarding Doc’s injury. Even though this wasn’t my cup of tea, this was a good read and I would recommend it to readers who enjoy this style of writing.
