The Comeback by Shanora Williams

The Comeback (Beware, #2)The Comeback by Shanora Williams

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First off, I need to apologize to Ms. Williams for all of the nasty things I thought about her as I read The Comeback, especially the farther along I got in the book. Obviously based on the title alone, I knew Ace was back – something that had me clamoring to review the book when the opportunity came up – and even knowing the lifestyle that Ace led before and during his time with London, I still was not prepared for the lies, the deceit, and the betrayal that Ace and London confronted time and time again in the novel. And as much as I cursed Ms. Williams for the twists and turns, I was in awe of her ability to create conflict that felt natural to Ace’s lifestyle rather than contrived just to shake up the reader.

Even knowing that Ace was alive did not prepare me for the circumstances surrounding his death at the end of Beware, why he was believed to be dead, and where he had been for over three years. It was unbelievable yet completely believable considering his world. And yet, Ace’s ability to stay strong the entire time until he found his way out was not surprising. After all, Ace always gets what he wants and once he had his freedom, he only had one thing on his mind… London. He barges in to London’s life despite Bianca’s warnings to leave her alone now that she’s finally moved on with a good man. But Ace is an admittedly selfish man and he does not care how his return is going to affect London and the life she has carved out for herself after 3 years. Learning that Ace is alive is an emotional upheaval, but that is nothing compared to how seeing him in the flesh turns her life upside down. Why? Because when push comes to shove, London loves Ace to the very depths of her soul and his death did not kill that love. London may have moved on in life, but not in her heart. And this is why, despite having a good man in her life, she cannot say no to Ace nor can she walk away from him, no matter how hard she tries.

Ms. Williams shows her talent for writing with The Comeback. Again she delivers high-octane action scenes, suspenseful plot twists, off-the-charts-hot sex scenes, heartwarming romance, and betrayals I never saw coming – there were some serious WTF moments. As I had such high expectations for this novel, it took all that I had not to bump it to the front of my list. In fact, I actually forced myself to wait until the last minute so that I could read it on the weekend…when no one would be around…so I’d have no interruptions…so I would not add to the Crow body count. I am quite pleased to report that I have no bodies to hide and Ms. Williams delivered above and beyond my expectations. The Comeback was just as intense of a read as Beware, perhaps even more so because there was far more on the line for Ace this time and he proves once again, that he won’t go down without a fight. The Epilogue was fantastic – a perfect bit of closure that still left the door open for more should the author ever decide to revisit the series.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
