Review of Bear by MariaLisa deMora
Bear by MariaLisa deMora
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
As much as I enjoyed reading Mica and Slate, Bear is by far my favorite of the series to date – despite the fact that I cried like a baby several times throughout the book. As with the previous books in the series, Bear can be read as a standalone as there is minimal overlap of scenes, but if you’ve read the previous books it will give you further insight to various incidents the occurred.
Consistent with Ms. deMora’s writing style, Bear tells us the story of how Rob Crew becomes Bear and how his life led him to the Rebel Wayfarers Motorcycle Club. Rob’s story is both joyful and heartbreaking – to find love at such a young age and to know it was a love with staying power only to have it ripped away so unexpectedly had me in freaking tears. I was devastated for Rob when he learned of the accident and shredded when he returned home on bereavement leave to tend to the house. The author did an excellent job of making me feel Rob’s love for his wife and daughter – he was a good man who loved his girls deeply – and it was her ability to make me connect with Rob so easily that caused me to cry for him several times while reading Bear. As such, I was tickled pink when Eddie entered the story, even if it was only from afar in the beginning.
Even though Eddie and Rob had an instant connection, an instant spark, they didn’t act upon it for years and when they did they took a long time to get to know one another before they moved to intimacy. This was due in part to Rob’s unwillingness to risk his heart and expose it to potential loss again, but it had more to do with Eddie’s refusal to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Eddie refused to get involved with a biker because she didn’t want to be part of that world anymore. Thankfully, she could only resist Bear for so long and their feelings for the other made for some really loving and hot sex scenes.
As with the prior books in the series, Bear contains a lot of action and suspense, but the primary focus is on the relationship between Bear and Eddie. I enjoyed that the characters realized that the initial spark between them was attraction and didn’t try to claim they were in love. Ms. deMora does a wonderful job of infusing her characters with traits and experiences that go a long way to making them feel real. Eddie’s musings over the bite she received from a student with autism succeeded in cementing my preference for her within the series (yep, it’s happened to me on more than one occasion). Again, I loved the touches the author provides of the other characters and how she continues to develop Mason’s story within the series. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, but even more so for Mason’s book.
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Review of Dial M for Ménage by Emily Ryan-Davis
Dial M for Menage by Emily Ryan-Davis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Dial M for Ménage was a great sequel to Ménage on 34th Street. Whereas 34th Street dealt primarily with the sexual aspect of Liam, Kat and Hunter’s budding relationship as they reunited after a decade apart, Dial M addresses more of the non-sexual aspects as they move forward. In this installment we see each of them deal with their individual issues as the attempt to move from a married couple and single guy to a family of three. As if their personal issues were not enough of an obstacle, Liam’s foster sister graces him with news that makes a complicated situation even more so.
One of the things I enjoyed about this book was that the person who was the most resistant in the first book, Hunter, found himself fighting to keep the three together. It was as if once he decided that a ménage relationship was what he wanted, nothing was going to stop him, not even his other partners. While he has the most to lose career-wise if their relationship was discovered, it is his military training and discipline that enable him to remain focused on the end-game, a successful relationship of three.
Of course, I enjoyed the sexual interactions in this installment as much, and maybe more so, than the first book. This is likely because the author increased the intimacy between Liam and Hunter and the physical relationship between the two men developed fully in this time around, resulting in some hot M/M scenes. Honestly I was so excited to see this occur that I cannot remember if we were treated to another DP scene, but the Liam sandwich was well worth it and was so hot it short-circuited my memory (MMF).
Ms. Ryan-Davis did a great job as the solo author of Dial M for Ménage. I can only hope that we get at least one more novel featuring these three as I would love the opportunity to see how things move forward after the big decision they made in the epilogue. Until then, I can enjoy rereads of both Ménage on 34th Street and Dial M for Ménage when I’m in the mood for a steamy ménage read.

Review of Hell on Wheels by Z.A. Maxfield
Hell on Wheels by Z.A. Maxfield
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Hell on Wheels takes us back to Bluewater Bay, the sleepy little Washington town that Hollywood has invaded in order to film the television show Wolf’s Landing. Thanks to Ms. Witt and Ms. Gregg’s contributions to the Bluewater Bay series, I have fallen in love with this series and Ms. Maxfield has insured that my love affair continues as she weaves a beautiful story of love and family for Nash and Spencer.
As a Bluewater Bay native, Nash is comfortable with his life. He’s not necessarily happy that his twin has gone off to college in another state, or that his sister has been wheelchair bound since the age of three due to his stepmother’s negligence, or that his father has left him in charge of the family’s garage, but he is content with his life as the caretaker of his family. If from time to time he feels like his life is closing in on him all he has to do is jump on his motorcycle and go for a ride, which is what he was doing when he runs into Spencer – almost literally. As an actor with a recurring role on Wolf’s Landing, Spencer comes to Bluewater Bay only when he is needed. And thanks to his soon-to-be ex-husband Peter’s recent affair that has cast Peter as a father-to-be, Spencer is in need of the partial anonymity that the town offers. So it’s no surprise that Spencer isn’t looking for love, but a one-off with a sexy mechanic is another story entirely. Yet Spencer finds himself drawn to Nash despite his recent heartbreak and personally returns Nash’s wallet instead of sending it with one of his minions (their name for themselves). Both men acknowledge that nothing can come of it, but neither can deny themselves spending time with the other. As their friendship grows so do their feelings for one another which leads to the hottest sex either man has ever had – and it was quite the pleasure to read about as well. But as Spencer’s time in Bluewater Bay comes to an end and his ex makes a grand gesture to win Spencer back, what will become of their fledgling relationship?
I absolutely loved Spencer and Nash. They’re chemistry was perfect – both in and out of bed. What I’ve failed to mention is that Spencer is British and his “stiff upper lip” and dry humor contrast wonderfully with Nash’s laid back personality and light-hearted humor. I enjoyed their banter and teasing. Ms. Maxfield does an excellent job of creating such contrasting characters and conveying their differences with their dialogue. I particularly loved the scarecrow scene and how it seemed to enable Spencer to speak up with Peter later in the book. Hell on Wheels is an excellent addition to the Bluewater Bay series and I cannot wait to read more from the series and the author.

Review of Her Bear Protector by Doris O'Connor
Her Bear Protector by Doris O'Connor
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
For the most part, Her Bear Protector was a pretty good read. I liked how Ms. O’Connor has Tina inform the reader of the history between her and Ronan via her internal monologue while getting right into the action. There was no dragging out of the “reveal” as Tina learns that Ronan is a bear shifter almost immediately into the book’s beginning. And what a way to find out. The relief Tina felt after the shock of seeing all the blood and destruction is probably the only reason she didn’t run away screaming when Ronan shifted into his bear.
As with all shifter books (and most paranormal romances in general), the insta-love issue that inundates so many contemporary romances does not apply in Her Bear Protector due to mating instincts. However, it really didn’t apply once the reader learns that Ronan recognized Tina as his mate when they first met but because of his duties as a Protector, he did not pursue the mating bond. He actually kept watch over her from a distance to insure she was safe, but otherwise left her alone. I loved how growly and sexy Ronan was, yet he was unbelievably gentle and protective of Tina. But I will say that I was right there with him in his bewilderment when she freaked out on him after he told her what his being a Protector meant – that was a crazy whiplash scene that I reread three times to see if I missed something. Thank goodness we had Mrs. H to explain Tina’s reaction to us later.
What I didn’t love were things that just annoyed or bothered me personally. Tina’s tendency to stick her tongue out at Ronan seemed quite childish. I don’t recall reading what her age was, but that behavior kept negating her previous acts of maturity. That said, I literally snorted when Tina had the actual thought that “She wasn’t some schoolgirl for fuck’s sake.” One of my other issues was how quickly they progressed to D/s sex. Their conversation had already established that Tina’s experience was limited to reading romance novels, yet Ronan jumps straight in with restraints and blindfolding. Don’t get me wrong, the sex scenes in the book are all kinds of hot, the progression just felt rushed – not the sex itself. These issues didn’t prevent me from enjoying Her Bear Protector, they just kept it from being a great read. Overall Ms. O’Connor has penned an enjoyable read that is filled with lots of hot sex, a great romance, and an intriguing cast of characters I hope to see more of. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and am anxious to find out if it will be set in the same village or a different one in need of another protector.

Review of His Forever Summer by Tara Finnegan
His Forever Summer by Tara Finnegan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Carla finally gets what she deserves … a happy ending! His Forever Summer gives Corbin’s Bend fans a chance to get to know the real Carla and to find out why she has been such a troublemaker in the past. It may have slipped my mind about her previous marriage but even so the details regarding its demise were so sad. It makes it easier to understand why she tried so hard to cling to what she saw as a good man (e.g, Jim and Marcus). It’s also what makes her decision to friend-zone Kieran not only understandable but admirable. Carla knew what she wanted (a DD relationship) and didn’t attempt to convert Kieran or compromise her standards simply to land a man. The lack of desperation looks good on Carla.
As for Kieran, he flees to his big brother’s home in America to escape the upcoming nuptials of his long-term girlfriend, the one who said she wasn’t built for marriage. Learning that what she actually meant was she wasn’t built for marriage with him was understandably a blow to Kieran. Hiding out in Corbin’s Bend for the summer seemed like the perfect idea. Because of why they left Ireland to begin with, Ange doesn’t want Jim to tell Kieran what Corbin’s Bend is all about – she’s had enough of being shamed by their family and doesn’t want to deal with Kieran’s reaction to their DD relationship. Unfortunately Jim agrees to her request and ends up with two black eyes when Kieran jumps in to save Ange from being beaten (aka a punishment spanking). I, of course, laughed my arse off at the scene – when will residents learn that it’s in their best interest to disclose that Corbin’s Bend is a spanking-friendly community? Fortunately their friendship allows Carla to explain to Kieran what he actually witnessed between his brother and sister-in-law and she goes on to explain that she herself has an appointment with a professional disciplinarian. This disclosure serves as the catalyst for Kieran to offer a summer relationship as he both fears for her safety and is jealous. After finding out that Kieran is indeed able to provide the spanking she so very much needed, Carla finds herself agreeing that temporary with Kieran is better than nothing and the two fall into a very caring relationship that gets quite steamy once he realizes that Carla no longer wants to friend-zone him. Will the summer be the end or can they find they find a way to move on from their respective pasts and build a lasting relationship?
His Forever Summer is a great addition to the Corbin’s Bend series and goes a long way in repairing the damage that Carla has done to her standing within the community. And because we are in Corbin’s Bend, we are treated to an obstacle filled journey as these two make their way to the happy ending they deserve. I’m looking forward to my return to the spanking-friendly community with A Brush of Violet.

Review of Perfect Chaos by Nashoda Rose
Perfect Chaos by Nashoda Rose
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I don’t normally comment on covers, but sweet baby Jesus that man is hot. I have lusted after that man since the first time I saw one of his pics on Facebook and I had no problem envisioning him as Deck the entire time I read. Now that I have that out of the way, Perfect Chaos was a perfectly timed read for me. I enjoy a good romantic suspense, but Ms. Rose managed to ramp up the suspense to a level I hadn’t realized I was missing. This made for one seriously intense read that kept me guessing the entire time and truth be told, I’m still in the dark about several things but that’s the mark of a great romantic suspense series – it leaves you with more questions than answers so that you are compelled to read the next book.
The Prologue had me in tears. Having to witness Georgie’s emotional pain upon learning that her brother was dead was devastating. Unfortunately as the book unfolds we learn that that scene was just the beginning of her downward spiral and I found myself quickly sucked into her story. I devoured this book because I knew Georgie was hiding something, I could not figure out what it was and I just had to know. When her secret was finally revealed, that was not even on my radar. Just about the time I thought I had a handle on what was going on … BAM! another twist or another betrayal was revealed. What was not a surprise was the sexual intensity Georgie and Deck had. Although it took her ten years before she finally convinced Deck to ignore the promise he made to her brother, Georgie finally got her man … again and again and again … you get the idea. Even better than the scorching sex was the love they had for one another and how each was willing to sacrifice in order to protect the other.
Although the Unyielding series is a spin-off from the Ms. Rose’s Tear Asunder series, you do not have to have read the Tear Asunder books first. I haven’t read that entire series and while the characters make appearances in this book, they are friends of Georgie’s and not pivotal to the storyline. Perfect Chaos has the Unyielding series off to a great start and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series because I am dying to learn more about Kai.

Review of Reality Check by V.L. Locey
Reality Check by V.L. Locey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
One of the most striking things about this series is that each of the women that have been the focus of the books is completely different from the others and Ms. Locey has done a superb job of writing each of the leading lady’s story from a unique perspective. There is no confusion from one character to the next because they come from different backgrounds and have different life circumstances, thus making each of their voices unique. The Wildcat’s owner, Isabelle Lancourt is no exception and Ms. Locey has created a character that is so beautifully cultured yet fiercely driven that I found myself swept up in her story.
I found Isabelle to be utterly charming and surprisingly funny considering her circumstances. A widow of less than a year, she finds herself having to prove that she does indeed know hockey and is well qualified to be the Wildcat’s owner. As if being a woman isn’t enough of a handicap, that she is a former model and black just seems to add to the strikes against her. Determined to prove that she is more than just arm candy, she takes off to Russia in order to secure an up and coming hockey player. Unfortunately the Wildcat’s coach, Philip Moore finds out about the trip and intercepts her at the airport and accompanies her to Russia. During negotiations tempers flare and Isabelle finds herself between Coach Moore and a wall and gets a starring role in one of the hottest wall-sex scenes I have read in a while. Oh my goodness I was jealous as could be. Russia proved to be a VERY successful trip for Isabelle as she got both of her men. ;)
I really enjoyed the chemistry between Isabelle and Philip and how Ms. Locey injected a healthy dose of reality in one of the sex scenes when his back started bothering him. I loved that they could both laugh about it rather than getting upset with one another when their age (50) reared its ugly head. Admittedly there was a time when I would have cringed at the idea of a couple in their early 50s having sex, but with age comes wisdom and the fact that these two are smoking hot in their own right made Reality Check an immensely enjoyable read. My only complaint about the book was that it ended before I was ready for it to. There are questions I need answers to. As such, I cannot wait for the next book in the To Love a Wildcat series because I am really hoping for news on the progression of Isabelle and Philip’s relationship and how their unexpected expansion pans out.

Review of Slate by MariaLisa deMora
Slate by MariaLisa deMora
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Although Slate is the second book in the Rebel Wayfarers MC series, you do not have to read Mica first. This book is Slate’s story – his adolescence, his years on the road after leaving home to find work to help support his family, the clubs he encountered while traveling for work, and his time with the Rebel Wayfarers. If you read Mica you will likely appreciate the minimal overlap between the books, not because it eliminates repetitive scenes, but because you learn the things that happened behind the scenes that Mica wasn’t aware of. I found this especially insightful when reading Ray’s attempted abduction of Mica from her house while Slate, Tug, and Tucker were there – I liked learning why Slate had gone to Mica’s room that night when he did.
The first third of the book details various aspects of Slate’s life before he meets Mason. Ms. deMora does a wonderful job of painting the picture of the painful yet impacting adolescence Andy (Slate) experienced and how it shaped who he would become. I loved how each of the significant experiences of his life were revealed and how they served as the story behind one of his many tattoos. It is through this that we learn that Slate is a sentimental man who takes life’s lessons to heart. Make no mistake, Slate is a total bada$$ but he is also a friend and a Brother to many people. I for one would much rather be a recipient of his loyalty and friendship than to be responsible for pissing him off and being the object of his wrath. Even though he and Essa did not end up together (my apologies to those readers of Mica who didn’t figure that out from Slate’s synopsis) I thoroughly enjoyed reading about their time together – the mutual masturbation scene was freaking hot!
I absolutely adored the relationship that Slate developed with Ruby. That he offered her a choice between club Princess and his Old Lady showed how aware he was of her problems even without actually knowing what they were. I really liked how patient he was with Ruby and that he took his time with her so that she became comfortable with him. This allowed the author to build up the sexual tension between Slate and Ruby, thus resulting in some really intense sex scenes. While Slate doesn’t have the same level of action and suspense that most of my MC reads do, it held its own with several threads in the story and had me on the edge of my seat more than once. Slate is an excellent addition to the Rebel Wayfarers MC series and I’m looking forward to reading Bear next.

Review of Ménage on 34th Street by Elise Logan & Emily Ryan-Davis
Menage on 34th Street by Elise Logan & Emily Ryan-Davis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
WOW! That was a scorchingly hot read! The sex scenes are hot, hot, HOT! We know from the book’s title that a ménage occurs during the course of the book, but the level of sexual intensity the authors introduce from the very beginning will keep your toes curling throughout most of the read. While things may be a bit uncertain initially, this trio ultimately go for the gusto and explore most of the sexual couplings possible (MF, MM, MFM) and the authors’ ability to describe a scene makes reading Ménage on 34th Street an almost voyeuristic experience.
I will admit that I didn’t read the book’s synopsis carefully and didn’t realize that the Kat and Liam had known Hunter long before he entered their relationship. Their history with one another made for a much more enjoyable read, especially as they dealt with past hurts and problems and attempted to move forward. What made the relationship aspect so realistic was that the issues weren’t just between Kat & Liam as the couple and Hunter as the third being added to the relationship, but there were also issues arose between each of the pairings. I further appreciated the attention that was paid to Hunter’s serving in the Marines and how pursuing a long-term relationship as a trio could impact his military career negatively.
The authors did an excellent job in writing a ménage book that was both realistic (i.e., addressing real world problems) and sexy. Ménage on 34th Street has definitely made in on my reread list and I am looking forward to reading the sequel to find out how the fare as they move forward.

Review of There's Something About Ari by L.B. Gregg
There's Something About Ari by L.B. Gregg
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Ohhhh, you are a cruel, cruel woman Ms. Gregg. I cannot believe that you gave us a television-style fade-to-black ending. That was so not nice … lol. While this is only the second book in the Bluewater Bay series, I am completely enamored with the series so far. In There’s Something About Ari, we meet Buck and Ari – both are men who grew up in Bluewater Bay, but whose lives took entirely different paths. Buck never left Bluewater Bay; he gave up his scholarship in order to take care of his younger brother when their mother died. In contrast, Ari fled Bluewater Bay, found his way to Hollywood and broke into acting.
Buck is bewildered when he learns that Ari is not only returning to Bluewater Bay for a role in Wolf’s Landing, but he’s also moving in next door. Ari was Buck’s best friend growing up and as their past is revealed it is easy to understand his reaction to Ari’s return. What Ari did not know was that Buck is gay and was in love with him – something Buck never revealed in fear of losing his best friend. But Buck learns that he was not the only one keeping secrets back then and his world is turned upside down when Ari tells him why he left. But is an understanding of the past enough for these two to be able to move forward toward a future together?
I loved both Buck and Ari. Ari’s outgoing personality and quirks made him easy to love. Although much more reserved, I found Buck just as lovable. He made a huge sacrifice to insure his brother had stability in his life when their mother died – it was a situation that no 18 year-old kid should ever have to deal with, yet he did so automatically. As much as I liked the guys individually, it was their chemistry and Ari’s pursuit of reestablishing their friendship that make There’s Something About Ari a 5-star read for me. Even if Ms. Greg only treated us to one sex scene, it was a hot one. Actually, considering how much damage had to be repaired to their relationship, the lack of sex was actually appropriate – no matter how much I wanted more sexy fun times between the two. I absolutely loved this book and is has been added to my reread list. I am looking forward to my next stop in Bluewater Bay already.

Review of The One I Choose by D.H. Starr
The One I Choose by D.H. Starr
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The One I Choose was a really good read. Mr. Starr gives us a rather thought provoking look into Cal and Rhys’s life that illustrates the importance of communication. Cal and Rhys have been together for three years, recently moving to Boston for a fresh start after another chef trashed Rhys’s professional reputation. Due to an inheritance, Cal saw the situation as an opportunity to secure their future by opening a restaurant for Rhys – a place where Rhys was the boss and had full-reign over the kitchen and menu to do what he does best … create and cook delicious dishes. Unfortunately, as the contractor in charge of the project, Cal is working seven long days a week in order to get the restaurant opened as soon as possible so that Rhys can get back in the kitchen. Being unemployed in a new city with virtually no friends, Rhys is lonely and wants to spend more time with Cal but Cal is always working. Considering the no-win situation they were in, it was not surprising when the men began to show signs of resentment.
It is these conflicting goals that are the driving force behind much of this novella. As the story is told exclusively from Cal’s point of view, we get to experience his frustration as he tries to balance Rhys’s need for his time with that of work, specifically getting the restaurant finished as soon as possible. What I really liked about this story was the level of realism that Ms. Starr infuses into it. Cal and Rhys obviously love each other, but they are not getting along. The arguments between the men felt real because I felt their frustration with each other and the situation. That there were times when Cal initiated sex to avoid yet another uncomfortable conversation furthered the point I felt the author was trying to convey – that sex is not a substitute for conversation – especially when it clearly did not solve their problems. However, I would be remiss not to point out that said sex was HOT!
The One I Choose is packed full of emotion. Cal and Rhys are at a crossroads in their relationship and communication is key – and something that neither man is excelling at. The disagreements, the frustration, and the disappointment are only the tip of the iceberg they must navigate as they evaluate and reevaluate what they are looking for in life. Ultimately Cal has to decide whether the need to “rescue” Rhys is worth the damage he is doing to their relationship. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The One I Choose and absolutely loved the ending. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Starr’s writing.

Review of Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts by Lyn Gala
Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts by Lyn Gala
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I am beside myself with how much I enjoyed Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts. Having read Ms. Gala’s Turbulence series, I jumped at the chance to read this book and I am so glad that I did. She has, without a doubt, secured a spot on my list of must-read authors for sci-fi romance and erotica.
This is the first book of the Claimings series and it introduces us to the inhabitants of Rownt. Liam is a human linguist and trader for the human military. He has been in his post as a trader on Rownt for five years and has been very successful at it – and we learn later in the book, more successful than even he realized. But an unpleasant past and the emotional baggage he has because of it means that he does not qualify for an officer position due to his psych scores. While Liam is not interested in an officer position, he is interested in maintaining his post on Rownt. He feels that he has done well in building his reputation as a trader among the Rownt people and has made a difference. Unfortunately his new commander appears to have a God complex and seems hell-bent on throwing away all of the progress Liam has made in the past five year along with Liam.
Ondry is a Rownt trader who has cultivated a trading relationship with Liam. Because the book is told from Liam’s perspective, the reader must draw conclusions about Ondry’s motivations from his behavior, and Ms. Gala’s writing style makes this rather easy. At least I felt like I had an understanding for what Ondry was doing and why LOOOOONG before Liam did. Rather than making the story predictable, this actually made witnessing Liam’s understanding of what a “palteia” was that much more enjoyable. I loved watching Liam settle into the palteia and chilta relationship with Ondry – it was unbelievably emotionally satisfying for me to see Liam metaphorically shrug off the pains of his adolescence and the human judgments associated with his sexual identity. He was not only accepted by Ondry and the Rownt, he found that it actually made him a coveted being among their people. Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts is a beautiful story of acceptance that is presented in an intriguing sci-fi setting with a few steamy m/m scenes for a bit of icing on the cake. Ms. Gala has definitely got the series off to a great start and I cannot wait to read Assimilation, Love, and Other Human Oddities to see how Liam and Ondry’s relationship progresses.

Review of Courted by Discipline by Bree Cariad
Courted by Discipline by Bree Cariad
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Courted by Discipline was recommended to me by a fellow reviewer who knew that I am a fan of the Corbin’s Bend series. While both series are based on Domestic Discipline (DD) relationships, Corbin’s Bend is about adults who are involved in sexual relationships whereas In Hyacinth is more focused on the courting culture of the town of Hyacinth. Much like my reaction to my first Corbin’s Bend book, I’m a little off-balance after finishing Courted by Discipline.
In Hyacinth, once a girl reaches her eighteenth birthday she can enter the courting pool. Potential suitors request a “date” and join the girl and her parents for dinner, if her father approves his request. If a suitor is interested in getting to know the girl better, he asks for additional dinner dates and may then ask her father for permission to court her. If he gives his approval, the town’s council must approve the courting request. At this point the girl is then presented with a courting contract and has the final say as to whether or not the young man may court her. If she agrees, there are 12 stages to the courting which ultimately lead to marriage. While the concept of courting in Hyacinth sounds nearly medieval to me, I can understand how a young girl raised in such an environment would look forward to reaching courting age. Although Kathy was raised in a DD family, she was not raised in Hyacinth and was unaware of the courting custom when her family moved there. This is why I was just as appalled as she was when her father sprung it on her. I do not discredit the lifestyle as I am a firm believer of “to each his own.” Rather my issue was the way in which her father waited until the eleventh hour to inform her of it. Even though her father wasn’t from Hyacinth, his brother lived there and he was familiar with the practice before they moved there. His decision to withhold information that was pivotal to her life and future until he had no choice but to tell her bugged me to no end.
Aside from that, the actual courtship between Kathy and Alexander was quite sweet and I found the innocence of it refreshing and surprising considering that he is ten years her elder. While my personal knee-jerk reaction to the courting system is “no way, no how would I EVER go along with something like that,” I completely understand where a young woman raised in a DD household would not find it a fraction as disconcerting as I did. Ms. Cariad has a smooth writing style that made this an easy read, even when the subject matter irked me personally. That said, I will be reading book two in the series as I suspect that In Hyacinth will go the same way as Corbin’s Bend did for me – at first I wasn’t sure but as I read on I was anxious for the next book.

Review of Idle Bloom by Jewel E. Ann
Idle Bloom by Jewel E. Ann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I do not say this lightly, but Idle Bloom has got to be one of the best books I have read this year. It’s a beautiful love story between two broken people who finally get a chance to heal with one another’s love. As I expected, I definitely shed quite a few tears several times. What I did not expect was how much I laughed while reading the book because it’s not a romantic comedy; rather, Vivian and Oliver have fun and laugh with one another and their laughter is contagious. This emotional rollercoaster ride made for an immensely enjoyable reading experience.
Both Viv and Oli have baggage from their past. While some of Viv’s baggage is visible, she reveals her internal baggage to Oli early on in their relationship. Upon hearing the circumstances surrounding her tragic accident I felt a mixture of relief (that it wasn’t due to a sexual assault) and sadness (because of the actual incident and how it scarred her). While I may have had mixed feelings surrounding her accident I had no doubts regarding how I felt about her and Oli’s relationship – it was beautiful. Even when it was painful or hurtful, their love was beautiful and watching it grow and deepen as they faced far more obstacles than they should have was an experience I look forward to repeating when I read Idle Bloom again. Equally enjoyable was the freaking hot sex they had … frequently … and thoroughly. It and their laughter helped to balance out the overwhelmingly sad circumstances that were the cause of Oli being broken. It has been quite a while since I have felt such sympathy for a character in a book. Oli’s loss was devastating and I found it very easy to understand his reactions. Although both of their pasts are unbelievably sad, I loved the realism with which Ms. Ann wrote them.
I must admit that as the end of the book neared, I questioned whether or not Oli and Viv would get their happily ever after. There was so much that hadn’t been said or done and I found myself running out of pages with no resolution in sight. Yet Ms. Ann did the unthinkable – she gave Oli and Viv’s story an absolutely perfect ending for them and did so without making it feel rushed or contrived. The author maintained the realism of the characters and managed to leave me wishing this book was the first in a series instead of a standalone so I could have more time with Oli and Viv. Idle Bloom is an excellent book that has secured its spot on my re-read list and I cannot wait to check out more of Ms. Ann’s books.

Review of Mica by MariaLisa deMora
Mica by MariaLisa deMora
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
There is a LOT going on in this book. Mica is not only the story of Michaela Scott, but as the first book in the series it also serves as an introduction to the Rebel Wayfarers Motorcycle Club. Readers who are sensitive to the subject of rape should proceed with caution as it is one of the more prevalent themes of the book. While the author handles the topic with great care, it does come up repeatedly in the book and could be a potential trigger for some readers.
Mica is an inspiring combination of strength and vulnerability. She had a tough childhood that got worse after her mother died when she was 14. Because she was a skilled horse rider and trainer she started on the rodeo circuit at 18, where she met Ray and learned more about life's cruelties as he was abusive and controlling. When she managed to flee that situation she found herself in Chicago and eventually neighbors with Mason, the MC President. Mason is not only sexy as sin, but he also observes her discomfort with him and spends months making her comfortable in his presence and gaining her trust. Although Mica doesn't understand its significance, Mason claims her as the club's Princess and puts her under their protection – an action that ends up saving her life and insuring her well-being several times throughout the book. It is during one of these incidents that Daniel enters her life. While Mason is bad boy sexy, Daniel is good guy hot and finds himself quite drawn to Mica. What follows is one of the oddest love triangles I have ever read and I loved every bit of it.
I was touched by the way that Mason and Mica loved one another. Her trust was something he fought hard for and was so determined to keep that he refused to allow his attraction to her interfere. Because of their friendship, the sex scenes between them are intense because they are filled with love. However it is the sexual chemistry between Mica and Daniel that produce the seriously hot sex scenes. But as hot as the scenes are, it is the constant love and support that Mica gets from both of the men that enable her to face all the obstacles that life continues to throw at her – of which, there are many. And while it is one heck of a rocky road, Mica finds her “always” with the help of a hockey player, an MC President, and an entire motorcycle club. The author has the series off to a great start and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Review of Brick by Brick by Maryn Blackburn
Brick by Brick by Maryn Blackburn
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I am surprised to admit that I didn’t enjoy Brick by Brick as much as I expected to. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy it, but it fell more into the category of a good read than a great read. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure why. It had all of the right elements – solid writing, seriously hot M/M/F ménage scenes, even hotter M/M sexual interactions, and great characters. Ms. Blackburn even threw in a great plot twist that forced Natalie, James and Gage to reexamine their priorities and expectations. See? It has everything, but for some reason it just didn’t break that barrier into great read for me.
James and Natalie have been married for ten years. They have a great marriage and love each completely. Gage is an actor who they meet at a business party and they help him “escape” some fans and agree to go back to their place and enjoy a couple bottles of wine. As the wine flows and inhibitions loosen, James and Natalie find themselves doing what they only fantasized about – having a ménage with another man. It was HOT (and not because they were in front of the fireplace). Gage has to return home the next day for work and one thing leads to another and weeks have passed without the couple hearing from him. Natalie feels like James has withdrawn from her and fears that she is no longer exciting enough for him sexually. When Gage returns unannounced and the trio tries again, the bedroom activities become more intense again – and definitely makes for some great reading. The interactions between James and Gage seem to focus more on the duo, causing Natalie to feel like a third-wheel and worry that she is losing her husband.
While her reactions are completely understandable, Natalie’s constant self-doubt regarding her place in the relationship is likely what made Brick by Brick a good read instead of a great read. As I said, I enjoyed the book. It’s solidly written, the characters are well developed, and the sex scenes are hot – it was just missing that little extra oomph. That said, I will have to add Ms. Blackburn to my watch list as I enjoyed her writing style. If you’re in the mood for a M/M/F ménage, be all means check it out because it is an enjoyable read.

Review of Starstruck by L.A. Witt
Starstruck by L.A. Witt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
When the review opportunity came up for this book, I almost passed on it. Romances about two successful Hollywood stars rarely interest me because too often I find the character annoying and/or over-entitled. But with this being an M/M romance, I decided to take a chance on it and I am so glad that I did because there is just so much to love in Starstruck.
Levi had my sympathy right off the bat in this book. Not even two minutes into his meeting with Finn and I was ready to throttle the man; it made it easy to understand why Levi would leave Hollywood and acting behind when he had to deal with “that” on a regular basis. Anna’s arrival at the meeting was a breath of fresh air and I got a kick out of the way she proceeded to manipulate Levi – but in a good way. So I really felt bad for him when he was offered the part of a lifetime but warned that his sexuality could NOT come into question – talk about being between a rock and a hard place.
Of course Carter was just as endearing to me. I thought his reaction to the possibility of meeting Levi was adorable. We have a tendency to forget that even stars have idols and Carter was giddy at the idea that he might get to meet his. But what was really cute was that Levi was just as starstruck over Carter. That they were attracted to one another – even if they couldn’t acknowledge it – just made the whole situation that much interesting, especially when things heated up (yummy!). I really enjoyed that they decided to build a friendship rather than avoiding one another OR jumping straight into bed. Of course, it made a bad situation that much more emotionally painful later in the book, but it gave the guys a chance to really get to know one another and realize what was really important.
Ms. Witt has done an excellent job in kicking off the Bluewater Bay series with her contribution of Starstruck. She has quite successfully sucked me into Bluewater Bay, Wolf’s Landing, and the characters involved. I am looking forward to reading more books in the series as well as checking out the author’s work.

Review of Blue Mountain by Cardno C.
Blue Mountain by Cardeno C.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
If you enjoyed CC’s Mates series then you will love Blue Mountain, well at least I did. I know, you’re shocked, right? All snark aside, regardless of the genre the book is written in (contemporary or paranormal romance), CC’s books are ultimately about love and when you’re reading a romance novel the whole point is to be swept off your feet. And this is what CC’s books are for me, a chance to be swept off my feet as I fall in love with not one, but two men and Blue Mountain once again delivers on this promise.
I must admit right up front that I found the opening of the book hilarious. Not only did I enjoy the fact that the shifter cubs got to partake of the Halloween tradition of dressing up and going Trick-or-Treating, but the visual of Mitch dressed up as Frankenstein’s monster had me cracking up. It also helped to highlight the bond between Mitch and his brother Freddy. I found the idea of twin Alphas fascinating, especially as they work together for the good of the pack with Freddy taking on the role as pack Alpha. The bond between the brothers is so obvious that I wasn’t the least bit surprised later in the book when Freddy expressed his dissatisfaction at not having met Simon yet. What did surprise me was Mitch’s response. It was not a question of his love or mating instinct for Simon – because face it, once you meet Simon you cannot help but fall in love with him – but rather it was Mitch’s willingness to leave the pack and move to a city that shocked me. As for Simon, I had to agree with Mitch’s assessment that Simon was adorable in most things and completely understood Mitch’s desire to bundle him up and protect him from the world.
As is my experience with CC’s books, it is the relationship that develops between Mitch and Simon that is the focal point of the book. Because of Simon’s past, Mitch must exercise a great deal of patience and fight his shifter instincts so that Simon can come to realize that Mitch is his mate. This restraint allows Simon to get to know Mitch and fall in love with him, taking the reader along for the ride at the same time. Of course, this makes for some extremely erotic sex scenes when Simon finally accepts that Mitch is his mate. I absolutely loved Blue Mountain and cannot wait to find out how CC’s next creation sweeps me off my feet.

Review of Finding Their Bliss by Thianna D.
Finding Their Bliss by Thianna D.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Finding Their Bliss was a good solid read for me. As the first book in the series, Thianna D introduces us to the pro-spanking community known as Corbin’s Bend. What? Did you read that right? Why, yes you did. Corbin’s Bend is a community located a couple of hours away from Denver that welcomes residents who enjoy giving and/or receiving a spanking, whether it be in the privacy of their own home or in public within the community, wherever the discipline needs to be provided, it’s okay with the other residents.
In the first installment for the series, we meet Charmagne Kendle, whose life was destroyed when she trusted a friend with her secret interest in spanking … not that she had done it or was looking for someone to spank her, just that she was fascinated with the concept. Char quickly learned that her friend was NOT a friend as she lost her job, her fiancé AND her apartment when her “friend” decided to tell others about Char’s spanking fantasy. I found it quite entertaining and karma at its best that Char just happened to stumble upon a piece of property located within the Corbin’s Bend development that wasn’t actually part of the community, so she moved there without realizing she was about to find her destiny – a spanking-friendly community. That fate put her in the path of the delightfully delicious Brent Carmichael was just icing on the cake … once she found out the true nature of Corbin’s Bend. As expected, the sex is hot and Brent and Char most definitely find their bliss in the bedroom.
As a regular reader of BDSM novels, I was excited for the opportunity to read and review some of the novellas from the Corbin’s Bend series. Thanks to Thianna D, I finally understand the difference between a relationship based on domestic discipline (which is the type of relationship Char and Brent form) and a D/s or Master/slave relationship. Finding Their Bliss is a quick, enjoyable read that is a good start for the Corbin’s Bend series. I look forward to reading the next author’s take on the spanking-friendly community of Corbin’s Bend.

Review of Saving Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia
Saving Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Abso-freaking-lutely perfect! I have spent the last three days with the brothers of Poughkeepsie and as I finished each book I couldn’t imagine how Ms. Anastasia could make their story any better and outdo herself. Yet she did with each book. And Saving Poughkeepsie is the perfect ending to a series I really don’t want to see end.
With all of the action that happened in Return to Poughkeepsie, I wasn’t sure what to expect with the “truce” between Beckett and Vitullo but I REALLY didn’t expect to find out that Mary Ellen wasn’t the only loon in that family. Seriously, the apple didn’t fall far from that tree. I was utterly astounded by the plays Vitullo made in order to insure his legacy. Creepy doesn’t even begin to describe it. Unfortunately his machinations meant that Eve was forced to experience even more loss and my heart broke for her. But Eve and Beckett proved once again that love conquers all – albeit in some odd yet effective ways. And in Beckett Taylor’s signature style, Poughkeepsie was saved with a boom.
In Saving Poughkeepsie, Ms. Anastasia gives us the chance to see how life goes on for everyone in spite of the mayhem that Vitullo’s actions inflict upon the city. We get to see Livia and Blake’s family continue to grow and how strong their love is. Kyle and Cole also saw their family grow with the arrival of Chery’s baby; my heart hurt with happiness when Kyle finally got to experience motherhood. As for Beckett and Eve, their relationship underwent sooooo many changes as they faced challenge after challenge in this book that I’m actually glad I can’t mention them due to spoiler issues because I’m not even sure where I’d start. But the author definitely kept me on the edge of my seat as I watched them face the challenges together – whether it was physically or emotionally, they stood by one another and forged an even deeper bond than they had. While Saving Poughkeepsie is intended to be the final book in the series, I can only hope that Ms. Anastasia’s Poughkeepsie muses start haunting her and demand their stories to be told now that the Poughkeepsie Brother’s Legacy is open. In the meantime, I can comfort myself with the knowledge that I can visit Poughkeepsie anytime I want and look forward to the release of the prequel, Poughkeepsie Begins.

Review of O Captain! My Captain! by V.L. Locey
O Captain! My Captain! by V.L. Locey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I absolutely adored O Captain! My Captain! As Maggie has been with the series since book one, it was nice to see her get her second chance at happiness. That she went the way of her predecessors and fell for a Wildcat makes one wonder what’s in the water at that newspaper for geez sake.
Although I was already familiar with Maggie’s character from the previous two books, I was not prepared to learn exactly how rough she had had it. She’s been a single mom for the past ten years, which she is grateful for because she was able to get out of the abusive marriage she was in. As her story unfolds, you can’t help but feel bad for her as life just seems to be handing her one serving of crap pie after another. Fortunately the light at the end of the tunnel appears in the form of Derrick Andersson. The Wildcats captain is everything she wants in a man but never thought she’d get considering she was a single mother of one rather surly teenage boy.
One of the many things I loved about this book was that Maggie and Derrick are adults in their 40s and they’re portrayed realistically with aches and pains from their career (Derrick) and aging. It made it so easy to connect with them. As Ms. Locey does such a great job of infusing the book with humor, I not only got to fall in love with the couple but I got to do so while laughing frequently. O Captain! My Captain! is an excellent addition to the To Love a Wildcat series and I am sooooo looking forward to the next book.

Review of Riding Steele: Crossroads by Opal Carew
Riding Steele: Crossroads by Opal Carew
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In Crossroads Rip and the boys are taking Laurie to a police station in the middle of nowhere so that she can turn over the necklace to an officer that Killer trusts to act as a go between. Once this is done, Donovan has agreed to drop all the theft charge. What we didn’t know at the end of Wanted was that Steele had given the necklace to Shock to hold for safekeeping, so they were able to leave immediately despite Steele’s angry departure.
This particular episode in the serial was a tad too predictable for me. Despite suspecting that it may be a set-up, Rip leaves the others at a diner out of sight of the police station so as not to make the cops nervous. Upon their arrival at the station, Rip parks behind the station and sends Laurie in unaccompanied while he stays positioned where he can’t see a thing. And you’ll never guess what happens next!?! Yep, that was sarcasm. But despite the predictability of Laurie’s abduction and subsequent rescue, there was nothing predictable about Laurie’s actual confinement once she was delivered to Donovan. As for the cliffhanger at the end of Crossroads, NEVER saw it coming. It wasn’t at the bottom of the list of possibilities because it wasn’t even a thought in my mind. I am so relieved that I have the final episode in the serial, Aftershock, all queued up and ready to go.

Review of Riding Steele: Aftershock by Opal Carew
Riding Steele: Aftershock by Opal Carew
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
At the end of Crossroads we learned that Laurie was wanted for questioning in regards to Donovan’s murder. WHAT!?!?!?! Needless to say, Aftershock starts off with everyone on edge because Donovan was alive and breathing when they left him in the cage after rescuing Laurie. Making matters worse is that Donovan’s abuse is causing her to have nightmares and flinch away from Steele. Will Donovan continue to impact Laurie’s life from beyond the grave? Can she and Steele make it work? These are just a few of the questions that are answered in the final episode of the Riding Steele serial novel.
The biggest thing to know about Riding Steele is that it is more of an erotic romance than an MC romance. Because the focus is more on the relationship between Laurie and Steele and less on the action, adventure and suspense that the MC books I usually read are, the circumstances surrounding Donovan’s murder are resolved rather quickly and felt quite anti-climactic to me. However, this does allow for a bit more angst to play out between Steele and Laurie as they try to decide how to proceed afterwards. Because of everything Donovan did to her, Steele is concerned that his need to dominate are going to hurt Laurie inadvertently. He’d rather walk away from her than hurt her and he sets out to do just that. This forces Laurie to make some tough decisions about what she really wants out of life and exactly how far she’s willing to go for love. The chemistry between them is still strong and it’s up to Laurie to prove to Steele that she really is ready to ride.
While I enjoyed some parts of this serial more than others, overall Riding Steele was a great read and I could easily see myself reading it again. Aftershock may only get a 4-star rating, but the entire Riding Steele serial is a 5-star read for me. Well done Ms. Carew.

Review of Dark Warrior by Julie Shelton
Dark Warrior by Julie Shelton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Dark Warrior would have been more aptly named Dark Warriors as Lady Kathryn was fortunate enough to be rescued by Nicholas, the Duke of Herron, and Rolf, his knight and best friend. As they were both drawn to her upon their hunting party finding her near-death in the woods, they worked together to keep her alive and found their natural protective instinct ratcheting up higher than ever before. It is apparent immediately that Lady Kathryn is in dire need of as much care and protection as she can get as her life has been a series of bad events that have gotten progressively worse, the most recent of which is her betrothal due to her father’s gambling. It is at the hands of her betrothed that she is raped and beaten nearly to death – the state in which Nicholas and Rolf find her. What follows is an action-packed story full of medieval weaponry, spies and intrigue, impending war, and a power-hungry villain attempting to usurp the throne, which just happens to include a scorching hot ménage between Kathryn, Nicholas, and Rolf.
As you may suspect, I thoroughly enjoyed the sexual aspect of the ménage relationship between Kathryn and her dark warriors. Nicholas and Rolf were so committed to wiping Kathryn’s rape from her mind that they were very thorough in their lovemaking and it … was … HOT! Because this is a full-length novel, the reader is treated to several sex scenes that will leave you wishing for your own set of knights … at least it did me. But what makes their relationship and the book even more enjoyable is that Nicholas and Rolf loved and romanced her. They were devoted to her happiness and making sure that she felt safe and loved and they most definitely succeeded in their mission.
Ms. Shelton’s Dark Warrior is a well-written novel that doesn’t just give you a quick and easy happy ending. She takes you on a journey as the trio not only finds their way as lovers, but also seek to secure their future and the future of their country and king as they face-off against the greedy cousin of the King. If you enjoy historical romances and ménages, I definitely recommend this book. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Shelton’s novels.

Review of The Half of Us by Cardeno C.
The Half of Us by Cardeno C.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Although this is the fourth book in the Family series, it is the first one I have read and I am so glad that it could be read as a standalone because I LOVED it. Honestly I shouldn’t be surprised because I haven’t read a Cardeno C. book yet that I didn’t love, but there was something about Jason that I connected to that made his finding love that much more enjoyable for me. The fact that Abe was a sweetheart and had the patience of a saint was an added bonus.
The stress that Jason faces as a heart surgeon on a daily basis was introduced in an extremely effective way at the very beginning of the book. The scene does an excellent job of setting the stage for Jason’s character and goes a long way in explaining many of his behaviors – at least for me it did. It also made his out-of-character move to approach Abe rather fascinating as was Abe’s equally out-of-character agreement for a one-night stand. The chemistry between the two was obvious and it made for an intense scene – an intensity that was repeated when they ran into one another again several weeks later. And again when Jason realized that he couldn’t get Abe out of his head and staked out Abe’s favorite coffee shop until he ran into him again. What follows is a wonderfully entertaining read as Abe and Jason embark upon building a relationship together, even if Jason is too oblivious to notice. Jason’s obliviousness is trait which I share and is part of why I enjoyed Jason’s reactions so much when awareness set in throughout the book – the final one of the book being the funniest of all and sent me into hysterics.
As much as I loved Jason and his cluelessness, it was a moment of self-realization that Abe has where he realizes that Jason is his dream come true that really moved me. Abe is a sweet, kind, and loving man who seems to be the kind of guy everyone loves when they meet him. He’s an all-around good guy, except in the bedroom; as much as he wants to be loved and cherished, he doesn’t want to be treated with kid gloves in the bedroom – at least not all the time. Abe’s past experience had shown him that he could have one or the other, but not both … until Jason. While it took Jason a while to realize it (and Abe already knew before Jason did), he came to love Abe and did so the way Abe needed (being cherished), yet managed to unknowingly fulfill Abe’s need for an enthusiastic lover. As expected, the sex between the two was off-the-charts hot, but it was the way in which they were exactly what the other needed that made me love The Half of Us so much. Watching these two navigate the pitfalls and landmines of their budding relationship and coming out better for it was a journey I know I’ll take again as this is yet another CC book added to my reread list. I will definitely being going back to read the other books in the series.

Review of Between the Raindrops by Tina Kay
Between the Raindrops by Tina Kay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Between the Raindrops was an entertaining read for me. Prior to signing up to review this book, I read the excerpt on the publisher’s site and I was hooked. The idea of a male escort arriving at the wrong address in the middle of a storm and ending up being the white knight in shining armor because he saved someone from having to ride out an anxiety-producing storm alone and THAT serving as the basis for a potential relationship … well I could not wait to get my hands on it. Fortunately, Ms. Kay did not disappoint me.
Despite the aforementioned night being the best Chris has had in years, in spite of the weather, he could not convince himself to call Jay. On the contrary, he convinced himself that as an escort he was not good enough for Jay. However, when Chris runs into Jay at a nightclub with Chris’s ex, Peter, he cannot help but reinsert himself into Jay’s life in hopes of protecting Jay from Peter. What follows is a sweet, funny, sexy and slightly suspenseful tale as Chris and Jay decide whether or not they want to pursue a relationship with one another, just how far they are willing to go and what sacrifices they’re willing to make for it to be successful.
I absolutely adored Chris and Jay and was so glad when they finally decided to give it a go – basically when Chris stopped devaluing himself and started trusting Jay to know what Jay wanted in a guy. They complemented one another so well. Jay’s innocence and love helped Chris realize that he wanted more out of life and gave him the reason he needed to pursue it. While Chris’s attraction and love gave Jay the confidence he needed to move forward in life and expect more from Chris. Peter was a wonderfully executed creepy-ex-boyfriend/stalker character who gave me a bad case of heebie-jeebies, especially at the end of the book. I was extremely happy with the way Between the Raindrops ended and look forward to reading more of Ms. Kay’s work.

Review of Drift by Lyn Gala
Drift by Lyn Gala
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Another stellar read from Lyn Gala. The crew of the Candiru is back for more action, more emotional upheaval, and, thankfully, more hot sex. This time around the story focused on Allie and Shank - that's Lacroix for those of you who read Turbulence. While we learn more about Allie as she comes to terms with feelings of failure due to leaving Jacqs and Zeke behind, I found that Shank's character development was far more fascinating. His familial background and the distinctions between family and non-family ships within their culture were presented in such a way that I received a history lesson without being bored or wanting to skip parts; but then again, we're talking about pirates and pirate tales are always interesting.
In Drift, the crew has to adjust to the fact that the war is now over. Allie's conflict with this new reality is a central theme in the book. However it's not how the non-war status will affect her that concerns her as much as what her crewmates will be expected to do in their new assignments, as well as what happened to Jacqs and Zeke after being left behind. These two things are what lead to some of the crew embarking upon a rescue mission to retrieve Jacqs and Zeke and thus the action begins, complete with jail breaks, pirate (space)ships, grand theft, and crossing the border into bat territory (an act which could restart the war). Are they successful? You'll have to read Drift to find out for yourself.
What I will tell you is that the sex scenes between Allie and Shank are hot. There is some light bondage play farther into the book and as it is just being introduced to the couple's sexual interactions it is by no means advanced BDSM, but it definitely increases the sensuality level. Ms. Gala has produced a sequel that is just as good as its predecessor and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Review of Enthrall Him by Vanessa Fewings
Enthrall Him by Vanessa Fewings
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I am completely wrung out from reading this book. While Enthrall Him may be the final book in the series (not sure on that), Ms. Fewings did not skimp on the action. There is so much that occurs in this installment that I feel as though I’ve read more than one book. That the author packed so much into the novel without making it feel rushed is an impressive feat. Even more impressive to me is the myriad of emotions I experienced while reading – lust, love, heartbreak, fear, anxiety, helpless, happiness, joy, and an overwhelming sense of urgency at times. It was the best kind of rollercoaster ride, with it often feeling like a free fall.
As the threat of Lance looms over Mia, Cameron and Richard agree that getting her out of the country is the best course of action. Because Richard has a past relationship with Lance, it is Cameron who will be escorting her to London. Mia and Cameron quickly discover that the close confines of their shared hideout is not conducive to ending their D/s “training” relationship – especially with their hearts involved. It was both beautiful and heartbreaking to watch Mia and Cameron’s bond deepen: beautiful because she opened Cameron’s heart and heartbreaking because she belonged to Richard. I hurt for Mia as she tried to come to terms with her love for both men, knowing that whomever she chose, the decision would leave the other hurt. It was the proverbial rock and hard place she found herself between and while being loved by two beautiful and powerful Doms sounds wonderful, I wouldn’t want to be in her place. No matter how erotic the sex was – and it most certainly was.
Add to the love triangle several situations orchestrated by the Merrill’s to collect on the auction and the transformation that Mia has undergone over the course of the series is amazing. While I laughed myself silly when Mia compared Helete Merrill to a “Velociraptor in heat,” I feared for her mental health when the scene at Oberon Grove began to play out. Just as distressing, but in a different way, was the final chapter of the book in which Mia’s decision was made for her and the ending of Enthrall Him was perfect. Ms. Fewings has created such a wonderful character in Mia that I felt as though I was right there with her, hence my wrung out state. I absolutely love this series and do hope that Ms. Fewings has plans for more as I would love to see the other Dom find his happiness without Mia.

Review of Enthrall Her by Vanessa Fewings
Enthrall Her by Vanessa Fewings
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Enthrall Her finds Mia on the path to self-discovery as she and Richard attempt to start their life together. However, the surprise that Mia faced at the end of Enthrall puts Richard in a precarious position of wanting to protect her from everything, including the BDSM-lifestyle he had planned to introduce her to. As Mia rebels against his refusal to teach her to be his submissive, Richard finds himself unable to handle her and give her what she needs. Coming to terms with the fact that she does indeed want and need training as a submissive, while recognizing that he is unable to meet her needs, he turns her training over to Cameron.
Surprisingly, most of the book takes place in a two-week period as Mia undergoes intensive training and education in a variety of subjects (French lessons, etiquette, math, geography, etc). I say surprisingly because Mia AND Cameron undergo such a change that it is hard to fathom that it was only two weeks, but such is the way of immersion therapy or training. While there was more sex in Enthrall Her than the previous book, it was not graphic and it was pertinent to the storyline (and it was hot). Because they spend so much time together, Mia quickly finds herself falling for Cameron and sees indications that his feelings toward her have changed.
At the end of the two-weeks, Cameron must return Mia to her rightful master. Does he follow-through with it? Or has the beauty tamed the beast? You’ll have to read it to find out and Enthrall Her is so worth the read. I cannot wait until the sequel comes out. I MUST know what happens next. Excellent job Ms. Fewings.

Review of Enthrall by Vanessa Fewings
Enthrall by Vanessa Fewings
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The blurb is a bit misleading. It reveals that the story is set in a fetish club; Mia is drawn to her wealthy boss, Richard, who is the club's senior dominant; Richard offers white-hot passion, threatening an unbound pleasure like no other; Cameron also finds himself enticed by Mia's haunting innocence. Because of these statements, I was expecting an erotic, sex-filled read as we accompanied Mia on her journey to become a submissive and that's not what I got. Don't mistake me though because I'm not actually complaining about the book but rather its blurb. I feel that many potential readers will draw the same conclusion I did and opt not to read Enthrall because they expect it to be full of sexcapades, thus denying themselves an outstanding read.
My misconception as to what I thought the book was about is why I picked it up and oddly enough, Enthrall is about misconceptions – being open-minded enough to admit your misconceptions and being willing to change your view when given new information. Much of the book is about Mia's misconceptions and how she faces new information (whether she did so voluntarily or was dragged there kicking and screaming) and processes it. Mia enters Enthrall with a host of preconceived notions as to what goes on there, the type of people who work and visit there, and, most importantly, her life and the people in it. As she makes this journey, she is accompanied by Richard, Cameron, and “the girls” whose acceptance of her teaches her that family comes in many forms.
Enthrall is a beautifully written book about the human condition that suffers from a blurb that seems like it's trying too hard to sound like so many of the popular BDSM series and, is thus, selling itself short. While it will likely catch the eye of erotica readers - who won't be disappointed that there is actually very little sex in it because they understand that sex is only a part of BDSM - I fear that it is going to send potential romance readers away and they'll be missing out on a great read. If you enjoy books about the human condition and people learning that things aren't always as they seem, then check out Enthrall - let go of your misconceptions and let the author whisk them away.

Review of Return to Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia
Return to Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
When I first picked this up to read, I thought I could get away without rereading Poughkeepsie because it was such a powerful book that I thought I remembered it well enough to jump right in to Return to Poughkeepsie. I was wrong. I ended up rereading the first book and am so glad I did because there was so much about Eve and Beckett's relationship that I had forgotten. To be honest, there was quite a bit about Beckett himself I had forgotten and it would have been a real shame to not give him his full due.
Beckett is the best kind of bad guy. He does the wrong things but for the right reasons. He's a dealer. He's a pimp. He's a murderer. He's the kind of character we should hate because he's unrepentant for what he's done. But I find myself unable to hate him because he does what he does for the protection of the family he loves. While Poughkeepsie showed us that Beckett would kill to protect his family, in Return to Poughkeepsie he proves more than once that he's willing to die for his family. But he's not the only one. Eve is just as committed to preserving the safety of Beckett's family – which we learned at the end of Poughkeepsie is also her family. While Eve and Beckett are each scary in their own way, united they are an unholy force to be reckoned with, as more than one person learned. The chemistry between the two is even more combustible this time around, both in and out of bed.
I must admit that I was shocked to see how much time elapsed between Beckett's departure and his Return to Poughkeepsie What did not surprise me was the collection of misfits he had amassed. Nor was I surprised by how easily he slid back into place when he returned. While his methods are often unconventional, he takes care of the people close to him and they remember it, repaying him with loyalty. As this is the second book in the series and builds upon the previous one, there are a lot of specifics I can't discuss because of potential spoilers. What I can say is that I loved getting to catch up with everyone to see how their lives continued in Beckett's absence. Although I may not have cried as much as I did while reading Poughkeepsie, Ms. Anastasia still took me on one heck of an emotional rollercoaster ride with the intensity of the situations the Poughkeepsie crew faced this time around. I cannot wait to see what she has up her sleeve for Saving Poughkeepsie and fortunately I don't have to wait at all as it's next up.
